The Order Of The Universe

This could be on a post office wall...

This could be on a post office wall…

Who doesn’t like getting Likes from other bloggers on their posts?  I sure do…. not just because I want to think people are actually bothering to look at what I post, but I also happen to be a huge fan of avatars… or Gravatars as they are here on WordPress.  I like the individual images everyone uses to represent them… and can pick all of my regular followers out merely by their Gravatar footprint, as well as those of many of the bloggers who leave occasional likes… be they true followers or spammers who just happened upon one of my posts and are trolling for follows.  You know the type… you see their Gravatars in the Like gallery of bloggers all over WordPress.  Hey, I’m not complaining about them… there was a time they were my only source of Likes…

At least somebody with an unpronounceable name likes me!

At least somebody with an unpronounceable name and a shitty blog likes me!

I’m the kind of person who picks up on patterns that many others don’t notice, and there’s something about the Gravatar Row that appears at the bottom of each of my posts that has always intrigued me.  Namely, that regardless of the order in which bloggers will hit the Like button on one of my posts, the Gravatars will always end up falling into the same order every time.  Goldfish, Cutter, and Mental Mama will always end up somewhere in the first few spots on the list, while others like Merby, Squirrel Picnic and Jaded get stuck on the other end and will eventually get pushed off the edge into oblivion.  What is it that determines this seemingly pre-ordained order everyone’s Gravatars will fall into as soon as they tickle my Like button?

lizbit and skanki

And who doesn’t like having their Like Button tickled?

It certainly wasn’t alphabetical order… by registered name or blog title.  Perhaps it had to do with tenure at WordPress?  I began to strongly suspect that when I noticed that my friend Fanny, who had just registered with WP a little over a month ago, would always end up dead last on my Like list.  And then last night, I happened to be reading a post by Grandmalin and one of the recommended posts from your past that now appear under everything you write caught my eye and I decided to check it out.  This particular post she wrote was from March….. of 2007!!!

That's practically ancient!

That’s practically ancient!

Since Grandmalin always appears first on every post of mine she hits the Like button for, and I can’t imagine many of my other regulars were blogging at WP for at least 7 years now, that seems to be the final piece of proof I need that the Like order is determined by when one signed up for WordPress!

i'm watching you!

Brilliant deduction, dumbass!

I would love to see where I stand in the Like order… especially since WordPress doesn’t seem to have a clue when my actual blogaversary is (I signed up on Christmas Eve, but get the stupid anniversary badge every May 23rd), but the trouble with that is you will always see your own Gravatar first in the gallery of Likers.  This is obviously WordPress’ way of making you feel special…

You are special, darling!

You are special, darling!

So that’s it… I had nothing earth shattering or vitally important to blog about today.  I just wanted to share that observation with you all so you could go about your lives wondering why in the hell I would even notice something like that.  Now to make the time you wasted spent reading this a bit more worthwhile, here’s a long overdue repost of George!!!

I have come to salvage this crappy post! Adore me!

My suspicion has been that it has something to do with how many followers the ‘Likers’ in your parade have, most to east. But I never did any investigating on it, ESN.

  2. You are 1337 so you are special, very. LEET. Or elite. Or top drawer, mate. No, really. You are. I believe!!

  3. merbear74 says:

I have always wondered about that, dumbass. ;)

    Yay George!
I’ve often wondered about the ordering of the gravatars as well. I noticed on a blog I follow that the same person’s gravatar was always first in the list.
I’ve checked a number of my old posts and your gravatar is always within the first 10, just to the left of NAPR’s gravatar, so there is probably some ordering going on, as you have theorised :-)

  5. I think it has to do with mutual following and interactions. For example Matticus is usually at the front of my list; we follow each other and he has been one of my top commenters. I think you usually fall in the middle…now I am going to start paying attention :-)

    • Disregard, just realized Guapo is further than he should be based on my theory.

I think you may be right then about the start date. My blog is over a year old though I didn’t actually start using this site until July 2013

      • I guess the only way to solve that mystery would be to check everyone’s starting date… but I don’t think that info is available in the profile… which is odd since most internet sites do list the registration dates of their users….

  6. Neato observation! Hodge and Podge think that they’re in charge of ordering gravatars on our blog. They try to always put blogs that show squirrel appreciation first. You must love squirrels a lot. You’re always near the top!

I think you must be psychic, because I am now going about my life wondering why in the hell you would notice something like that. lol :) and thank you for clicking on one of my ancient and obscure posts from way back when no one knew this blog existed. You’d think I’d be good at this by now, hey??? Oh well. Maybe in another seven years.

    • No problem! I always get a little giddy every time I get a notification that one of my ancient posts got some love it didn’t get the first time around, so I thought you would enjoy that surprise like! Hey, we’ll figure this blogging thing out together!

I laughed at this post! You are funny in all of your posts but this one is true. I seem to have certain people who have stuck by me the whole time, some who visit infrequently and others I see everywhere I go….are they stalking me? Ha ha! Smiles, Robin

  9. Twindaddy says:

    I’ve never pondered this before….

  10. Hey! I’m famous! My face is in your lineup.

    • You will be renowned in the squirrel blogging community! I took that screenshot from my Mass Transit post last week… so everyone who liked that got in the lineup for perpetuity…

  11. I have wondered how it it “worked” too. Great toons and I LOVE GEORGE!
    Great to see him again.

  12. ksbeth says:

it’s based on the orbit of venus. at least that is my best guess.

  13. pishnguyen says:

Well, of course, I had to add my Gravatar to your litany of likes! :D (LOVE GEORGE!!! <3)

    • YAY! I remember always wondering what that was in your Gravatar until you posted the story of your hamster a while back and used a larger version of that picture…

      • pishnguyen says:

Ha, ha! That is too funny. I never thought about how it might be hard to tell what the image was when the picture was in a small size. “Mystery Hamster” *cue suspenseful music* :D

  14. 1jaded1 says:

I’ve wondered that as well…of course WP says “you and umpteen others” liked this after one presses like, which makes it seem like “you” are #1. I feel better knowing TD is #3 and I am #20 on the post office wall! ;-)

Last in your program but first in your heart…

  16. Mental Mama says:

You could probably do some research and write an excellent thesis on this. :)

  17. I never thought of that. I thought the order was all in the timing of the likes. I just get excited to see anything and know somebody reading my odd little blog (or fooling me into thinking they are.)

By the way, I love the Sherlock Possum drawing! That is too cute!

    • That was a drawing I did for the short-lived Buster Snopes, the Myth Mashing Possum. He was supposed to pop up and poke a hole in any obvious internet BS being passed around on my old message board. That could be a rainy day theme idea for me, come to think of it!

  18. djmatticus says:

Wow! That’s crazy. I had noticed that the like order seemed to follow a pattern but hadn’t really considered why that would be. Now I know, and knowing is half of something, if only knew what that was….

  19. He’s so FLUFFY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks. I needed that! ;-)
