Buried Treasure

Autumn officially begins tomorrow, and as I’m sure you all know by now, Fall is the busiest season for our squirrel pals.  The nuts are falling off the trees like crazy, and the squirrels sqturday squirrel logoare super busy gathering up all they can find and making sure to bury it in a place where they hope they’ll be able to find it on a cold winter’s day in the future.  While this doesn’t work out perfectly since squirrels have a pretty poor memory (A bad memory which is often credited with planting much of the world’s forests), they do manage to find enough of the goodies they stowed away to survive until the Spring thaw.

This process has already been underway in my backyard for almost a full month now, and on one day during my nice sabbatical from work a couple weeks ago, I caught one of the little critters doing his thing that is oh so instinctive to his species… and for his efforts to hide his nuts from the rest of the world, be gets the honor of being the Autumnal Equinox edition of the Saturday Squirrel.

This looks like a pretty good place for my precious acorn!

I'll just shove this bad boy waaaaay down in that hole!

Time to cover up this nut! There! Nobody will ever know there's a yummy treat under here!

Hey.... you weren't peeking at my secret hiding spot, were you?

No, of course not, Mr. Squirrel.  Don’t worry, we won’t tell a soul where your Christmas dinner is hidden…

Have a great first weekend of Fall!

You must have little treasures buried all over!!

  2. Fabulous shots. We thought the squirrels hid their treasures in trees. So interesting that they sometimes actually plant trees unintentionally. A thrill to show the children a fair dinkum squirrel doing his natural “thing” 🙂

nothing worse than someone else finding and eating food you’ve squirreled away, hopefully he does not have roomies.

It must be so cool to have a backyard full of squirrels!
If they bury their nuts randomly in the lawn no wonder they can’t always find them! I always assumed they had a little stash at the base of a tree or something,

    • I feel blessed for sure… except when I think of all the damage them and the falling acorns do to my roof…

My oak tree is so prodigious at producing acorns, that there really is no need for them to bury them at all, there’s usually still a coating of them on the ground throughout the winter. Of course, natural instinct is sometimes stronger than common sense….

Great squirrel pics! They’re nicely detailed and close-up. =) Thanks ES.

So cute! I love the way they spend so much time patting down the grass (or, in my yard, moss) over the top of their treasure. I also love the way it looks like your Autumn Equinox Saturday Squirrel is giving you the evil eye for watching him!

    • As I recall, it was the evil eye picture that inspired me to use this series of photos and the nut-burying theme! And I was surprised how many people it educated on how squirrels stash their food! I take them for granted now, but I remember where I used to live, there were hardly any squirrels and I didn’t know a lot about them then…
