I’m waiting to be stroked…
It just doesn’t have the same ring to it, does it?
You’ve probably heard that less than complimentary name applied to squirrels before, most likely by someone who doesn’t appreciate the finer points of the species like we all do. But there is certainly some truth to that epithet… after all, squirrels come from the rodent family just like rats do. One of the main things that distinguishes squirrels from 
other rodents are their very thickly furred and fluffy tails. Remember how sad Buster looked in my most recent comic because he didn’t have a fluffy tail like everyone else did?
Well, beneath all of that frizz, squirrels don’t look any different than Buster does. Every once in a while, I can get a good shot of a squirrel where its fuzzy caboose is much more transparent than it normally looks… and there in that picture above you can clearly see the naked little wiry tail that we so associate with the rat. You wear that cute, majestic tail oh so well, Mr. Squirrel, but sometimes, even that thick fur can’t hide the puny little wagger underneath…
That’s alright, you’re still beautiful enough to be this week’s see-through Saturday Tree R…. er, Squirrel!

While I knew that in theory, it is kind of weird to see, especially so defined like that.
It looks like the brushes you use to clean baby bottles, or an attempt to make a tail for a school play. Tail envy must run rampant in the squirrel world.

It does look like those brushes (And I only know what they look like because I work at Mecca!) I’ll bet tail envy is a big problem… most humans probably wish they had one, at least until the first time we slammed it shut in the car door….
I think Squirrel is a better name… imagine you had to rename your blog too :o(

And a cute tree rat it is! Beauty is really just an illusion carried out with smoke and mirrors. Or, in this case, tail fluff. Having a bad hair day? Wear a sparkly pair of boots to distract. Put on a few pounds? That’s nothing some flesh coloured ljeggings and a kaftan can’t sort out. (I get all my best ideas from peopleofwalmart.com…)
LOL! As someone who works at Wal…. er, Mecca, I can assure you our clientele isn’t as tackily dressed as that site makes it out to be! I’ll be on the lookout for anyone coming in with a bristly see-through tail…

I like the word, ‘squirrel’ and am so glad they came up with it! Wonder, have you ever looked up when it originated and which language it came from? Sorry, if you have already covered this tutorial once already! Smiles, Robin
I haven’t written about the word’s origin yet, but I remember I came across a blog post once that did. It was a totally random hit so I can’t remember the name of the blog, but the history was quite fascinating. There were a lot of steps along the way, but I believe the ultimate origin is Latin and their word for “shadow”. I may need to check into this and do my own post, thanks for the idea Robin!
