Rainy days and Mondays may have always brought down Karen Carpenter, but those squares in the second column on your calendar are a reason to celebrate if you are a fan of The Nest! That’s because every Monday, me and DJ Scratchy put the needle on the record of another groovy cut from the Mecca Muzak CD that wears out the eardrums of customers and associates all over this wonderful land of ours.
This week, me and my homeponeh are going to feature a most excellent song from the legendary Brandon Boyd!
My bad. Brandon Boyd is best known as the lead singer, and one of the founders of the band Incubus. Incubus has had a whole string of hits on Billboard’s Modern Rock chart over the past 15 years, but they are best remembered for the one song that got them into the upper 25% of the pop Top 40, “Drive,” a wonderful song in itself which not only is a two-time Mecca CD entry, but it was also released as a single the same week as all of this was going on…
During the current decade of the 21st Century, Boyd has done some solo work… as well as a collaboration with producer Brendan O’Brien under the name Sons of the Sea. It was as this latter entity that Boyd released the 2013 song “Come Together”, which landed on both of the first two Mecca CD’s of 2014, and helped make the first half of the year sound oh so good when it came on….
I’m glad I’m not the only one who absolutely loves this song!
It has a great melody, great beat, and really cool lyrics… I’d think it would be hard not to like this song.
Of course, there are the haters, and you know they’re gonna hate. The comments on the YouTube video I embedded here, as well as another one that contains this song that I checked out this morning, have plenty of venom spewed Boyd’s way for his solo work being a “sell out” of his Incubus days. I have no idea what that’s all about, but if this kind of music is “selling out”, then please, I encourage more fringe artists to go for the gold out there!
And that’s all for this week’s edition of Mecca Muzak Monday! But before I go, due to the title of today’s spotlight tune, I would be remiss if I didn’t please my Fab Four fans out there….
I won’t mention that I prefer Aerosmith’s version… 😉
