Only in America would we celebrate a holiday in honor of a man who never even set foot in our country. To the north, they are celebrating Thanksgiving six weeks early (which I guess would make tomorrow Black Tuesday in Canada). Whether you are toasting dead Italians, munching on glazed moose, or it’s just business as usual… here at The Nest, we give you a reason to celebrate every Monday like it was a national holiday! Yes, it’s time for another cochlea cleansing edition of Mecca Muzak Monday. And this week, we will break from routine by not only honoring a very famous artist, but a song that made it all the way to #2 on the pop charts!
Oh boy… I can already tell this song is gonna suck.
The new Mecca groove has been on the air for three weeks now, and after initially not being impressed by the playlist, I’ve finally begun to pick out a few favorites… and have noticed very interestingly that there seems to be a lot of songs from the 00’s on the Fall CD. It is probably the most Oughts inclusive of the seven soundtracks… at least if you don’t count the original CD, which only had a lot of 2000-09 music because it was infested with John Mayer and whiny-era Taylor Swift songs…
I’m pretty sure there are OSHA regulations that were violated with that CD.
Anyway, the song I’d like to feature for this week’s MMM is a 2005 hit by one of the biggest divas of the past decade, Rihanna. Blowing out the fifth hour of the current Mecca CD are the totally def beats of “Pon de Replay.”
I was unaware Rihanna even existed until 2006 when she turned that Soft Cell song into “S.O.S.”, so somehow this earlier hit of hers eluded me until the Mecca mixmasters threw it on the current CD. I also once totally embarrassed myself during a lyrical game on my Millionaire message board by very confidently stating that I knew the artist’s name was “Rhiannon”, and the Fleetwood Mac song was called “Rihanna”….
Stand back, dumbass!
While I like the song on its own merits, the title especially tickles me. “Pon de” is basically just Barbadospeak for “on the”, which somehow translates into asking the DJ to replay the song. Of course, at The Nest, we like to think Rihanna is giving a shoutout to our very own equine DJ….

Ahhh, but I did use it to reference you since you tend to dislike the MMM songs featuring the more popular artists! I’ve seen her (I didn’t know her name until you just mentioned it) as the icon on your FB (or it it Twitter?) feed on the side of your blog, and I’m pretty sure you used her briefly as a Gravatar here. When I was looking for images to use, I kept trying to find a good one of the streaky haired lego punk rocker as opposed to all of the pink lego girl in the spacesuit ones that were coming up (Is that who’s in your current Gravatar?).
To make a long comment short (too late)… if you were thinking it was unintentional reference to you, it wasn’t! I just didn’t know from your comment if “the better of them” referred to the song, or the character choice…
My current avatar is Deadpool in a pink spacesuit. I do actually own a pink spacesuit girl, as well as the pink-haired rocker, so I may mix it up soon. Though I also have Deadpool, so he may end up as a pink haired rocker…lots of possibilities!
