Halloween has rolled around again, and here at Nest HQ, that means it’s time to create this year’s squirrel o’lantern! It’s been an annual tradition that dates back before this blog even came into existence. The first squirrel o’lantern design in 2009 was a rather simple, but certainly unique carving of the outline of a squirrel…
In 2010, I reversed the basic design and carved out the negative space instead…
In 2011…. well, let’s forget that October even happened….
The squirrel o’lantern was back in 2012, and this time with my blog as a vehicle for my artwork, I was inspired to try a much more intricate design. And behold the awesomeness…
Last year, Rainbow Donkey was the hottest thing going on my blog, so I found a way to incorporate him into the squirrel o’lantern along with witchy MBRS…
And now for this year’s squirrel o’lantern! I did not pick out the greatest of pumpkins, and doing this was more of an afterthought since bowling will prevent me from being home for Halloween evening, although I salvaged this shitty pumpkin with a pretty nifty design, and I’m gonna have this out on the porch tonight regardless!
Yeah, my possum can’t even catch a break in my pumpkin carving artwork!
Have a happy Halloween everybody!
Oh my gosh those are soooooooooo cute. I haven’t carved my pumpkins yet and might borrow some ideas.
I swear the squirrel, the BIG IN CHARGE squirrel, in my yard has decided to scream like a banshee and thump his tail nonstop like every day is Halloween!
A screaming, tail thumping squirrel is a happy squirrel! Feel free to be inspired by my punkin work!
And I shared this on my Facebook page so you don’t have to. Cute cute cute.
Since I don’t have FB myself, thank you for sharing my work with the dark side! 🙂
I was wondering how you were going to top your previous designs but you did! This year’s is hilarious, um, I mean really scary 🙂 (Obviously I was going to find it funny.)
It’s scary and hilarious! Unless you belong to the International Brotherhood of Marsupials…
Oh my gourd!
I was going to ask why Dr. Claw was reaching out for the squirrel in 2012, but never mind. This year’s wins the awesome Great Pumpkin Prize!
Perhaps Dr. Claw needed a new pet…
Amazing! Those are the best pumpkins I’ve seen in years. Good job, evil.
Thank you! I’m sure Fuzzy would approve…
My pumpkins never turned out as cool as yours. Nice!
I wield a knife quite well! If you ever need someone to cut a bitch, just let me know…
Awesome. 😀
Thank you!
You suffer for your art Bill, and I respect you for it. 🙂 Now who’s going to keep the neighborhood roughnecks from Smash City on this masterpiece while you’re bowling tonight?
Well, if they smash it, they smash it. It goes out by the tree for the squirrels to nibble on tomorrow morning anyway…
Forgot … I rolled a 551 last night, including a 214 in the middle of the sammich. Yay! Bounce back night and we took 5 of 7 on position night. Roll good tonight, sir.
Woohoo! I’d gladly take a 551, but we shall see…
Do it proud tonight on the lanes, sir. 🙂
489 with a whopping 123 in the third game. That weird game started off with two crazy splits… a Big Four, which I hadn’t left in at least 3 years… and a 4-7-9-10 which I have never, ever left before due to the fact that my through the nose shots will always take out at least the six middle pins. The bowling gods have a mean sense of humor sometimes…
That’s the thing with us bowlers, Bill. We always have to expect the unexpected. Every week to me is like watching ‘The Twilight Zone.’ Splits were invented by Rod Serling, you know.
Nice! And poor Buster, even in a carved pumpkin he gets it in the neck!
He just can’t win…. but where would I be without him?
In need of another character to kill off!!
Wow! Impressive carvings! I’m glad you took pictures because these deserve to be seen. Love the negative space carvings especially.
The negative space makes it glow! I’m no master by far, but I have a touch with pumpkin carving that I really don’t have for any other art form… we need more Halloweens on the calendar!
These are awesome! You have talent.
Thank you! Pumpkins seem to be my specialty…
I love them!
Those are all awesome! Some day I’ll design my own jack-o-lantern, but for now it’s Little Guy’s turn! I doubt too many people will know it’s supposed to be an Enderman (to match his home-made costume). Merry Tricks! 😉
Woohoo! Get ’em started off young! We always got our own pumpkins as a kid, and I had a lot of fun carving mine. Of course, I didn’t try for any cool designs like I do now that I’m a big kid…
I can’t wait to be all grown up!
my mom was not able to dismember a pumpkin today for a soup :o) I love your creations! Have a super squirrely howl-o-ween!
Thank you, and happy howloween Easy!
That’s a very cool punkin, ES. Happy Halloween!
Thank you! Happy Halloween!
Wow!!! You are so talented! That is so good! 😀
Thank you! The squirrel in the carving is not the only one who’s good with a knife!
Somehow each year I’ve missed this event!
Thanks for getting me up to speed; I love this!
Nothing brings a smile to people’s faces like pumpkin carvings of evil squirrels!
OMG, your pumpkins are SO awesome! I’m going to be embarrassed to post photos of mine after seeing these. My plan this year is to put squirrel food in the pumpkin so the squirrels have to reach in to get it so I can take photos of them with the pumpkin. Hopefully, the cute squirrel in the photo will make my lack of artistic talent less noticeable!
Damn, now I want a squirrel pumpkin!
That is an excellent idea! I never remember to save any of the goop when I hollow mine out, but I’m going to try this year so when I put the pumpkin out by the tree on Sunday morning, it’ll be an open invitation for the critters.
My secret to carving is drawing my design on the pumpkin then using a steak knife to cut it out. The teeth make them easier to control around the curves. I also got one of those carving kits with the really small blades that helped my recent punkins get some of their finer details…
I’ll have to try a steak knife for carving. I do have some of the little saws and other carving stuff too. I’m just not good at drawing or wielding sharp objects!
