It’s Earworms R Us! Open up!!!

Alright, everyone!  The weekend may be over, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop.  No, not here at The Nest, where Mondays always feature a special treat of sonic sweets… and we’re only handing out the good stuff these days!  Welcome to the next outstanding imitation in our Top 30 Cover Songs of All Time countdown!  DJ Scratchy and the Sponkies have got the treat bowl ready… now it’s just time for you to ignore that advice your parents used to give you about not taking candy from strange critters.  Remember, four out of five dentists recommended this song…

#8. “Knock On Wood” – Amii Stewart

In 1966, soul singer Eddie Floyd got some good fortune when he recorded a song called “Knock on Wood,” and added his name to the list of legends who were associated with Memphis’ Stax label.  The song was originally intended for another Stax singer, Otis Redding, but he was too busy sittin’ on the dock of a bay to be bothered with recording it until the year after Floyd used it to jumpstart his career.  Though it only reached #28 on the Billboard Pop charts, it’s become Floyd’s best remembered song… and one that has spawned more covers than you can shake a four leaf clover at.

Exactly whom is this supposed to be lucky for?

David Jones Bowie released a live version of “Knock on Wood” in 1974 that achieved a lot of chart success overseas… but the song’s most successful and totally awesome version would come a few years and one short but sweet genre later…

It only contains one song... but at least it's a good one!

Amii Stewart gave “Knock on Wood” a disco makeover in 1979, and soared all the way up to #1 with it.  This would unfortunately be one of the last disco anthems to ever take the country by storm, but it’s also one of its best.  Just try not getting down to this piece of pure 70’s awesomeness….

Finally, I have posted a video on this blog of an Amii/Amy who can actually sing!

Oh, come on, ES! Enough of the jealousy...

Oh, come on, ES! Enough of the jealousy

I can not possibly contain my love for the upbeat/dancy Amii Stewart version of this song.  The only reason it got slotted even this low in my countdown is because of its status as a #1 song, and the fact that it is still well known and popular today.  Rest assured, this will be the final chart-topper to appear in this series… and of the seven songs that remain, only two of them ever even got played by Casey Kasum on “American Top 40″… and even those two songs have fallen out of favor with your local oldies station.  You just can’t wait to hear what under the radar, eclectic covers remain to be played on The Nest’s cover song extravaganza, can you?

You're gonna need a lot of these to make it through the next two months...

  1. Amii Stewart is brilliant, I love that song. And I love David’s version too, there is something like a little madness inside… I like that :o)

I bet that video is really fun to watch while stoned.

    That poor damn little rabbit.

  4. I just keep learning all this stuff! Makes me wonder where I was first time around. Well, maybe best to let that slide 🙂

  5. oh the poor little bunny.
I also think this is the best version. I always loved the electric drums in this particular song. So good to dance to as a young disco duckie! ❤

Having been in high school when this version of the song came out, I unfortunately heard it quite a bit on the radio. Love the video! What the hell happened to Lucky the Leprechaun? He looks absolutely terrifying now!

  7. I liked this song when Emma Stone sang it in the movie, Easy A! It was naughty! 🙂

Amii’s version will kick ass forever, Bill. She’s the champ over gave-nobody-wood Eddie Floyd’s version easily. Too bad Otis didn’t get it. (The song, not wood.) And Bowie’s version is cool, but that’s no shock because, Bowie.

    • It seems like Otis passed on it until after it became a hit… Otis’ loss was Eddie’s gain. He might’ve languished in obscurity without it. I’ll take Eddie’s Wood to Otis’ Dock of the Bay any day, too….

And I just can’t help my disco fetish… though that will seem quite ironic when I get towards the upper, upper slots of the countdown.

Eddie’s version is pretty cool, I will admit, but I like Otis’ whistling pier song way more than you do, it appears, Bill.

Hey, great game last night! What a ripping series.

      • The Pirates will have no one but themselves to blame if they end up with the second best record in the NL, and still have to settle for the wildcard game. Ya gotta beat the team ahead of you, and they can’t seem to do that…

Quirky ES stat fact of the season… in the two games I’ve attended here this year, I’ve seen three triples, and all of them have come thanks to outfielders literally falling down and letting the ball bounce over their sprawled out bodies. Watching Yadi Molina huff and puff 3/4 of the way around the bases while the Buccos chased the ball all over was quite entertaining…

      • markbialczak says:

Yes, that must have been quite the sight, watching one of the 143 Molina brothers “legging out” a triple, Bill. You just earned a new nickname for today, my friend. Triple-Bagger.

Hey, the Pirates don’t deserve to finish ahead of the RedBirds because of this. You are right. Knock on wood for your squad. Lots of season left.
