The Nest’s Nest

It has plenty of branch appeal.

It has plenty of branch appeal.

Strain your eyes all you want, but this week’s Saturday Squirrel photo doesn’t actually contain a rodent anywhere within its pixelated boundaries.  What it does show is a miracle sqturday squirrel logoof sciurine construction, the squirrel’s nest.  I’ve featured posts about squirrels building nests before on past Saturdays, but this is the first honest to goodness squirrel’s nest I’ve ever seen built in my backyard oak tree in the six years I’ve lived here.  I was quite excited, but also a bit stunned when I first spied it yesterday morning.  While I haven’t been actively taking pics of my backyard bunch in a little over a month, I also find it hard to believe I wouldn’t have noticed this monstrosity with even a cursory glance out the window.

Just check out that good, solid construction of essentially a bunch of dead leaves molded together to form the floor and walls… and that’s probably a good thirty to forty feet off the ground, and at the end of a tree branch!  These critters really are arboreal engineering geniuses to make such a comfy, well put together home under these conditions…

Have a great weekend inside or outside of your own nests!

That baby has everything but a two-car garage, Bill!

That’s a very comfy looking nest! It’s amazing what a squirrel can do with sticks and leaves.

  4. We have a bunch of these, but they are really high up in the oak trees. I guess these little furries are not afraid of heights. Good picture. Actually, the first good picture I’ve seen of a squirrel’s nest.

    • I’ve seen some way way way up in the trees… and even overhanging the street. Talk about living dangerously! I think the only better view of this nest would have been a shot from above… I’d love to know if there are any tiny denizens living in there…

  5. Wow! Tarzan Squirrels family! Interesting and educational! ❤
