What $3.98 will buy you these days.

What $3.98 will buy you these days.

I splurged and bought my Halloween pumpkin when I got off work this morning… spending entirely too long digging through the seven or so half full cardboard bins of cheapass Mecca pumpkins we have left.  This one looks pretty good for becoming this year’s squirrel o’lantern…. definitely in better shape than some of the really shitty, deformed castoffs I’ve had to work with in previous years.  I have no idea yet what kind of scene I’m going to carve into it this year… but I won’t be messing with that until next Thursday or Friday anyway.  If you have any ideas for The Nest’s 2015 Squirrel O’Lantern, please feel free to leave them below.  Hey, you never know… your idea might very well end up illuminated on my front porch in a week and a half.  I created a new page in my header devoted to the history of the Squirrel O’Lantern for those who haven’t been around to see the recent designs, have poor memories, or who never pay attention to anything I post here anyway….

  1. I’ve got such a shitty deformed castoff this year… a good base for the hunchback of notre dame :o(

  2. Beautiful! I’m sure it will be awesome! Pictures please…
Alas.. I have no trick-or-treaters where I live because we are in a gated community. *sigh* Oh well… but I always loved carving pumpkins with my daughter when she was little! 🙂

We still need to get our pumpkins yet. D is going to join me and the munchkins for a carving party on the 30th. Nothing like pumpkin guts to aid in bonding.

  4. You should kill off Buster again. I am so impressed by your Squirrel-o-lanterns. One of my uncarved pumpkins from 2014 is still sitting on my front porch, happy as it can be. I’ll be getting two or three more to carve and stick out in my yard to lead the little monsters to the front porch. Good stuff.

I can’t wait to see what this year’s will be. Punkin is truly your medium. I, on the other hand, plugged in the ceramic one in my kitchen window, which will be all the punkin carving I’ll do this year.

Skip Halloween, go right to making it into a pie. 😀

No matter what you do, make sure to include some nuts.

I can’t wait to see what you come up with this year! And thank you for creating a page dedicated to your Squirrel O’ Lanterns for those of us with poor memories. I remember your Squirrel O’ Lanterns of Halloweens Past were really cool but I can’t remember which characters were doing what in them, not that I’ll have any brilliant suggestions. The creative area of my brain seems to have gone dormant!

    • I find that the creative area of the brain works best when we’re not actively trying to be creative. It seems to always show itself when we least expect it…

      • Trisha says:

That is very true. When I was trying to write a novel, my flashes of inspiration often came while I was in the shower and disappeared when I sat down at the keyboard!

  9. That’s a pretty handsome jack, though I have to say, for carving, some pretty ugly pumpkins turn into some interesting (if weird) punkin carving 🙂 I look forward to the final product!

    • There were some pretty deformed gourds for me to choose from… and I knew if I waited any longer, I’d really be bringing home an ugly duckling. But one of those past designs (I can’t remember which one now) was done on a punkin that looked like someone dropped it off a building. Turning a yucky punkin into an awesome jack o’lantern is a lot like how McDonalds makes their shitty burgers look so appetizing in commercials…

  10. I bought a pumpkin yesterday for 0.99 but I only grabbed the closest one and yes, the best side leans forward. Nuts! 😉

    • Even 99 cent punkins have to put their best face forward! I was actually sitting the pumpkins on the sidewalk to make sure they’d sit upright before deciding… some of them didn’t pass the sobriety test!

    Hey, I have that design on a t-shirt 🙂
How about a hideous Buster death scene?

  12. Quirky Girl says:

Your Squirrel O’Lanterns are simply amazing! 🙂

Let the knife work begin, Bill.

  14. I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with and I haven’t any suggestions other than something squirelly. 🎃

  15. I’m way too late to suggest anything for this year. But for next year, what about a flying squirrel?
