Remember back in August when I discussed how the crickets my online shops usually attracts had become a little less cricketier thanks to one seemingly forgotten design of mine? Of course you don’t… you probably can’t even remember what I posted here yesterday. But that’s what links are for, to refresh your memories…
This Rainbow Donkey design, which I drew over two years ago and had been ignored by every other person on this planet save Merby, suddenly sprang to life in August and started netting me a few sales on both my Redbubble and Cafepress shops simultaneously. While the coffee mug that post inspired Trisha to purchase is still the most recent thing my stupid RB shop has managed to make me virtual money for, it’s been a completely different story this Fall over on Cafepress, where……. well, see for yourself (click to enlarge):
That’s ten sales in the past three months… seven of which feature my Believe design! Hell, four of them are throw pillows… bought by people in three different countries! I have to think CP must actually like that design enough to be promoting it in some way to score all that action, especially in the ass cushion category. Of course, despite this flurry of official Rainbow Donkey licensed garbage I’m spreading around the world, it’s worth noting that I won’t be turning in my Mecca box cutter anytime soon. All of these will eventually end up netting me a whopping $10.61…. er, make that $9.55 once CP takes its 10% “shop fee” out of my measly profits.
And I’m not necessarily complaining…. after all, Cafepress is doing all the heavy lifting, including listing and promoting the items. The real money is made in selling directly through your virtual store, which only my online friends who have those links will use as their conduit for ordering my designs. Stranger traffic is gonna always find the stuff listed in the website’s “Marketplace” where the margins are infinitesimal. But 4.5% of something is better than 0% of nothing, right?
And yes, I know I’ve long owed someone a special design, which I hope to unass myself enough to actually get around to doing sometime before friggin’ Christmas….
Congrats! I just drank my coffee out of my RD mug this morning, as a matter of fact!
Did it taste like rainbows?
It tasted of rainbows and hope. Rainbows and hope, my friend.
My best sellers are stickers, which net me a generous 30 cents per. I don’t care though, because it’s more about getting my drawings out in the world than it is about money (which is good because there isn’t any). This is especially true since I started donating my Redbubble proceeds to charity.
P.S. I still use my Rainbow Donkey tote bag all the time. 🙂
I wish the sales I was getting on CP were on RB instead, because I definitely get more for sales there… but I’ll take what I can get, even if I might never see it. I’ll probably use what I accumulate to go towards next February’s contest prizes.
YAY! Way to put that unicorn to work! 😉
I started a CP store with a few of my best selling designs a while ago. I’ve sold one t-shirt in two years. I actually have 4 online stores right now (RB, CP, Boom Boom Prints & Society 6), yet, by a landslide, the majority of my sales come from RB. I ❤ RB.
And the tote has held up remarkably well.
You’re rich! Now you can retire from the Mecca!
I am in awe. I’ve only sold four items on Red Bubble since March. No shirt or pillows or pencil skirts – just phone cases, a sticker and an iPad pouch. Your Rainbow Donkey design is precious. Hmmmm I have a six year old niece who might like a pillow… and a teenage daughter who’d love something from Goldfish…
You’ve almost got me beat on RB… of my five sales there, three were just stickers. Until I started getting all these hits on Believe, all I ever sold on CP to strangers was a fistful of bumper stickers. I must’ve finally drawn something CP thinks it can market, which means it was a total accident!
I bought several stickers of Goldfish’s critters a couple years ago, and that was before my contest “inspired” her to draw a possum. I need to go buy something with that possum sometime…
Hey, that’s TEN TIMES my book royalties 🙂 Practically a fortune!
I think I’m going to cash it all out in pennies so I can roll around on the floor in it. Then get me one of those necklaces with the blinged up dollar sign hanging from it…
Congratulations!!
Thank you! You know, all of this started shortly after I sent you my RD painting. I think my unicorn has been blessed! 🙂
Well, I guess even sweet white baby Jesus wants a rainbow donkey!
Ha! I had to see if your Gravatar was listed on this comic or not… and it isn’t. So you must not know… 😉

Great minds think alike, clearly!!
I personally am very fond of my RD drink bottle. I have also been going well in the popularity of my patterns department. Oh but home spun wool. Sooo special. ❤️
If I could figure out how to get CP to sell rainbow yarn, I could retire! I think I would be floored at how many Rainbow Donkeys there are out there now all across the world from my store sales and my talented amigurumi followers bringing him into the crochet world!
Ker-ching! And just in time for Christmas.
Yes! And with CP’s payment policy where I have to wait 30 days to see if the customer returns it or not before I am credited with my cut, until I get at least $25 in my account before I can even get a check, and then the middle of the following month after I reach that mark before they will finally send it to me…. I might even get my royalties in time to buy gifts for next Christmas!
You are RICH now my friend. WOW – remember us little pigs okay. Snorts with piggy laughter. XOXO – Bacon
You got it, Pal! The caviar is on me next time my private jet comes down your way…
Congrats on the increased sales! The profits may not be much but you’re spreading Rainbow Donkey magic into the world and we could all use more of that!
Yesterday, my oldest used my Believe mug. I was pissed. It’s MINE and the coffee just doesn’t taste as good without the unicorn magic.
