The Best Of The Nest 2015

Well this is it… my 2015 posting year has come to an end.  There’s nothing left to do now but look back on what somehow managed to keep The Nest rockin’ during the past year and see if I can learn from the mistakes.  While I normally declare every year to have been my best year in the short history of this blog, I can honestly say 2015 did not reach that lofty status.  Not that ’15 sucked and was devoid of content of dubious quality… but 2014 was such a tough act to follow after my Millionaire Journey and Christmas Card event stole the show.  There were no WOWs this year, but there were certainly plenty of YAYS!

Not surprisingly, what was probably my best series of the year came right on the coattails of that 2014 burst of creativity, and that was my Evil Squirrel’s Zodiac series that took a twisted and sarcastic look at each of astrology’s 12 signs on the first 12 Fridays of the year.  There was nowhere to run and nowhere to hide, as everyone born between Aries and Pisces had their sign skewered in a way only The Nest can do.  And of course, we had a little help from the home stash of the Stoner Astrologers…

Once I was done mocking the stars, I decided to turn Fridays over to my readers to send me any kind of prompt they liked, for as long as I kept getting new ideas from different people.  Prompt the Squirrel Fridays made it 18 weeks, and even the easiest of prompts I was handed challenged me to find a way to answer it.  I did everything from draw my characters as chibis, to force my Ponies to watch late night TV, to take on Lord of the Fucking Rings.  It was suggested by someone that I do this again sometime, and I just may do that later on in 2016!  Get those thinking caps on everyone!

Another special series I did this year was give Mecca Muzak Mondays a 30 week breather during the Spring and Summer to run my Top 30 Cover Songs of All Time countdown.  It was like a walk down lame music memory lane as I presented desecrated classic after classic that I swear I really liked better than its original version.  It was fun to see who agreed with me and who thought I needed my ears cleaned out with hydrochloric acid…

Any countdown with a Bruce Willis song in it is guaranteed gold.

I brought back the Contest of Whatever for another run back in February with a theme of animals playing games.  Draliman and Merby joined the pantheon of CoW champions and made off with their very own authentic Cafepress ES crap.  I can promise you the contest will be back for a third annual edition this coming February, and I already know what theme I will use this time!  Let’s just say I expect many interesting submissions from my very creative readers…

I gained a new weekly series this year as I participated every Wednesday in Marilyn’s Serendipity Photo Prompt during its run from April though November.  I used the series to tell the story behind some of my past or newly taken photos, and quite literally brought down the house with some of them.  Upon Marilyn retiring the prompt, I continued the series on my own in December and dubbed it Picture Day.  Wednesday will continue to be Shitty Photography Day on The Nest in 2016!

Retro TV Ad Tuesday continued to limp along on life support, getting a small shot in the arm when I moved the series to my vacant Friday spot after my Prompt run ended in August.  While there were only a handful of new posts in this series this year, most of those are what I would consider to be some of my best commercial critic work.  Whether it was encyclopedias, hearing aids, chips or authentic Japanese American knives… the fucked up world of advertising did not entirely escape The Nest’s poison pen in 2015…

My Thursday comic continued to churn out every week, and even worked a little overtime with 53 Thursdays this year… with Buster fittingly beginning and ending the year in peril.  Looking for a laugh?  Might I recommend my favorites from this year…. the adventures of the Masked Marsupial, Odyssey hitting on guys in a bar, when not to photobomb, ungrateful possums, bad piercing advice, and the world’s worst charity

Saturdays continue to belong to the bushy tailed critters that inspired this blog, and it would be impossible to pick out just a few favorites from this series.  Check out my Saturday Squirrel archive under Categories if you ever need some cute sciurine therapy to get you through your day…

And every once in a while, beyond all of those regular and special features, I actually posted something unexpected and profound.  There was this touching squirrel love letter I wrote for Juliette’s contest back in January, how I spent my Halloween and Black Thursday, police harassment of squirrels in Germany, and how Rainbow Donkey is finally making me a little money.  And let’s not forget my homemade adaptation of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” made solely from the figurines and plushes on my shelf… many of which are pretty ponies…

OK, it wasn’t really that bad of a year…. but it’s certainly one I can improve upon in 2016.  Won’t you join me next year as I once again try my best to entertain and educate you here at Evil Squirrel’s Nest?  Happy Nude Year to you all!
