Between December 26th and December 28th it rained, and rained, and rained, and rained, and rained even more for good measure. While squirrels aren’t particularly fans of getting wet, they’re not going to just hibernate in their nests forever and wait out a biblical downpour that may never end. So with the rain still coming down a couple Monday mornings ago after 48 straight hours of the stuff, I noticed my backyard was bustling with almost as much squirrel activity as you’d see on a fair weather day.
So I grabbed the camera… but between it being just after sunrise and cloudy, it was pretty dark outside still and I’m too stupid to figure out how to take decent shots in low light. Now while wet squirrel pictures are cute and funny in their own right, seeing the way these photos I took of them came out is creepily adorable! Look at that squirrel in the top picture! It almost looks like a smiley face squirrel!
These photos unintentionally came out to look like really cool impressionist paintings of squirrels! Look at that happy little chunker up there! He looks so happy… I’ll name him Buddha.
That accidental painting effect is even more noticeable in the photo above of the squirrel standing in front of a running stream my overflowing ditch. Van Gogh would give his ear to be able to paint something this amazing…
As I’ve shown time and time again on this feature, sometimes my shitty photography can actually barf up some really cool looking images. I thank these drenched, photographically brushstroked Saturday Squirrels for being the blurry faces of my latest crappy art show…
Have a great weekend, everyone!
Coolness. We were inundated with rain, too, but our squirrels stayed inside. No chance for me to even try to snap a few impressionistic squirrel photos. I envy you having such cooperative squirrel models.
I think they were nuts to be out in that, but I’ve seen squirrels ride out the rain lounging on a tree branch before. Maybe the local species has waterproof fur…
yes… take that Bob Ross ( he is my enemy since I tried to paint with him. after 10 minutes I killed the canvas with the end of my brush and I threw the color palette agains the wall)
I’ll bet the wall looked really pretty after that!
Okay, now you’re just fishing for new Sandy nominees with some of those tags….
I don’t believe I have ever had a search for “squirrels gone wild” before, and I’m a tad disappointed in that…
The tags, oddly enough, don’t seem to mean much. Searches by tags won’t even pop up in my WordPress search engine…
What most people fiddle about for hours to achieve, you do quite by accident! Very cute little guys.
I’ll bet Monet never thought to take pictures of water lilies like this…
Looks like you are going to wash away! We’re in Phoenix … and it has been raining …. pouring … hailing … all week!
Hail! Arizona has more white stuff on the ground than even we have. That is impressive! We were supposed to finally get our first snow of the year today…. but looking out the window, apparently that was just a tease. Or it all melted while I slept…
Little Buddha is so adorable! These do look like an impressionist painting. Some of my favorite photos are ones that most photographers would consider a mess-up. I like ending up with something more abstract once in awhile. I hope your weather has improved so little Buddha and Smiley Face squirrel can dry their fur!
We had a whole week and a half of dry weather until this morning when it started raining again, and was supposed to change over to several inches of snow by this evening. I say “supposed” because quite obviously it didn’t! The only thing covering the ground is my Fall leaves…
Yikes. I’ve been thinking about you with the flooding. Yes, what were they thinking? Since following your blog I often wonder. Today, a squirrel tentatively approached the remnants of fireworks before skittering off. It was fascinating to see the “should i or shouldn’t i_”
Happy Saturday.
I didn’t realize squirrels were such all-weather critters until I started paying attention to them. Neither rain nor snow nor sleet nor…. well, maybe gloom of night will prevent them from completing their appointed rounds. That would have been fun to see a squirrel playing with a spent firecracker. I always pick them all up out of my yard the morning after (And of course, none of them are mine… I hate fireworks!)
Fireworks are evil. The dog in the apartment above me goes apecrap crazy and it is the owner who ligbts them off. We do have snow tonight. It’ll be interesting to see how the squirrels act tomorrow and the rest of the week. Night is saved for possums and skunks.
Wheeeee! Apparently they like to have fun in any weather. 😀
They don’t believe that old wives tale about catching pneumonia in weather like this!
And to think people spend hours at the computer to create these effects!!
I know! Some of the best CGI can be created purely by accident and incompetence…
