Good Morning!

Hey! Don't hit snooze on the earworm!

Hey! Don’t hit snooze on the earworm!

As Expose once sang in another forgotten 80’s song, seasons change… and whether it’s 80 or 8 below outside right now, welcome to the first full day of Spring!  We’ve got the cure for your winter blues and that chronic hayfever with another long lost melodious gem from the Dusty Vinyl Archive!  DJ Scratchy and her two Sponkie helpers are springing forward this week to unearth a tune not from the 80’s, but the 90’s!  In fact, today’s song was getting a lot of play on the radio at the same time you were probably hoarding canned goods and bottled water in preparation for Y2K hell…

The late 90’s band Smash Mouth is best remembered these days for two things… their debut “hit” Walking on the Sun (Hit in quotation marks since it made #1 on the Modern Rock chart, but like a lot of the best remembered music from the 90’s, got no Top 40 love), and their being the unofficial house band for the Shrek movie franchise.  One of those songs featured in the movie, “All Star”, was Smash Mouth’s first mainstream success… peaking at #4 on the Hot 100 and getting almost incessant airplay on the radio that summer.  Their follow up to “All Star” was slightly less successful and almost criminally forgotten about by today’s variety radio formats.  That would be the #11 hit from the Fall of ’99, “Then The Morning Comes”…

Smash Mouth was well known for introducing retro music themes into their songs.  “Walking on the Sun” was the first 90’s song I ever heard that sounded like it could’ve come from the 80’s.  “Morning” goes back ever further with a bit of a trippy, psychadelic vibe to it…

I'm a believer, man.

I’m a believer, man.

The music video for the song is quite a treat as well.  I’ll admit, I hadn’t watched it until I previewed the song for this post yesterday.  You gotta love the way the video portrays the “shit happens” theme of the song…

Why it’s always better to be pissed off than pissed on…

I’ll be back next week with another song from the All Star Game of forgotten classics…

  1. Is that Pamela Anderson at 1:00? naah it’s another girl, right?

  2. This is such a great band. I always think of Shrek when I hear their songs. I wish they’d do more new stuff.

I think this song got a lot of play time on a Seattle station because I remember it really well. I miss this era! I miss the days when I could turn on the pop station without wanting to shoot the radio or stab out my ear drums. I’d forgotten all about Smash Mouth but I miss them now too!

    • This song was big on the station I listened to at the time, and then all of a sudden I haven’t heard it on the radio in 15 years. I’m not even sure what reminded me of it. Heck, I listened to a station that specialized in the 90’s for almost a year and I never heard them play this…

  5. ody & biskit…..yea…. even as old az de food servizz girl iz…her rememburrz thiz toon !!!! thanx for de share 🙂 ♥

Don’t know this song at all. Never heard of Smash Mouth, although everyone else seems to be on board with them. Wonder what I was doing when they were a… smash. 😉

    • You must not have been listening to much new music in the late 90’s…. 1999 in particular which was about the only year they had mainstream success. There was a lot of fun music released that year…

      • Ally Bean says:

’99? Well that explains it. I was too busy stocking my bunker shelter for the end of the world a la Y2K to be listening to music!

On a completely tangential note, my aunt in Scotland sent me this silly joke from Scotland and I thought you might like it. You might be inspired to draw a cartoon around water slides.

There were four churches and a synagogue in a small town:
a Presbyterian church, a Baptist church, a Methodist church, a Roman Catholic church and a Jewish synagogue.

Each church and the synagogue had a problem with squirrels.

The Presbyterians called a meeting to decide what to do about their squirrels.
After much prayer and consideration they determined the squirrels were predestined to be there
and they shouldn’t interfere with God’s divine will.

At the Baptist church, the squirrels had taken an interest in the baptistery.
The deacons met and decided to put a water slide on the baptistery and let the squirrels drown themselves.
The squirrels liked the slide, but, unfortunately, they knew instinctively how to swim,
so twice as many squirrels showed up the following week.

The Methodists decided that they were not in a position to harm any of God’s creatures.
So, they humanely trapped their squirrels and set them free near the Baptist church.
Two weeks later the squirrels were back with the Methodists when the Baptists took down the water slide.

But the Roman Catholics came up with a very creative strategy.
They baptized all the squirrels and consecrated them as members of the church.
Now they only see them on Christmas and Easter.

Not much was heard from the Jewish synagogue,
they took one squirrel and circumcised him and haven’t seen another squirrel since.

  8. Um, there is an embedded virus in that video. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Dumping the file, boss.

    • I’ve never had an issue with viruses from YouTube videos before, and wouldn’t think it would be in Vevo’s best interests to sabotage the videos promoting their clients. I’ve already watched it three times and got no warning or strangeness from it…

  9. draliman says:

Never heard of them, but not too bad 🙂

  10. Lynda says:

OK, I hadn’t heard of them either and I watched the Shrek movies. But the best part of today’s post for me was that dog lifting it’s leg…

When I was 14 and the hippies owned San Francisco my family went camping in Yosemite (this really does connect; wait for it) Anyway, there were some real live hippies camping next to us and one of them came into our camp and sat down to talk to me. Just as I was starting to feel like I was ‘all that’ my dog came over and lifted his leg on the guy’s back! I was mortified!!! I was apologizing like crazy and then he said, and I quote: “That’s cool, man, it’s happened to me before when I was in Golden Gate park.” 😛

  11. I love that film clip but I ALSO think of Shrek. Seriously, you haven’t seen Shrek! Donkey stole the show! Whoops I have spoiled it for you! 😀

  12. Kat says:

Love that song. I actually have 3 of their albums.
