Might As Well Jump

The daring young squirrel on the flying trapeze.

The daring young squirrel on the flying trapeze.

I have taken a lot of awesome, cool, nifty, too good to be true photos of squirrels over the years.  Just when you think you’ve captured it all, the critters will show you something you’d never imagined you’d get on film.  But from the very first time I started taking sqturday squirrel logopictures of squirrels, there’s always been one shot I’ve desperately wanted to capture but have never quite been able to get… and that’s one of their amazing death defying mid-air leaps from branch to branch.  It would especially be a treat to capture that bonzai maneuver from directly below…

On my last trip to the park, I thought I found a squirrel who was going to give me that opportunity at long last.  With perfect, sunny weather to help better capture motion, he was just jumping here, there and everywhere high up in one of the park’s trees.  While I never did quite get the shot I wanted… I’ll settle for the photo up above for now.  Don’t let the zoom fool you, that jump’s taking place about 50-75 feet off the ground!  It’s not the kind of move most sane animals would make… but our batshit crazy Saturday Squirrels do it all the time!

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. imagine humans could jump like squirrels… I would like it to enter my house via window and without using the stairs :o)

  2. Both squirrels and cats AMAZE me by the way they jump. Wow. Great photo.

    • I love watching both jump! I’m not sure what inner sense cats use to jump, but it’s one thing Spilly never had. He couldn’t leap on things that were over his head. It was cute the way he’d use my hard drive as a stepping stone to make it up on top of my computer desk…

Awesome shot! My sensory processing is so slow that, even though I see the squirrels jumping in the trees, I never actually see it. They’re just on one branch, there’s a blur and they’re on the next one. It’s cool to really see how they look mid-air!

  4. Talk about a spring in your step. These guy will jump a distance five or six times their own length … and apparently don’t even need to catch their breath. If I could do that … well … I certainly wouldn’t be worrying about climbing the stairs. I would be an Olympic long jump champeen and have gold medals clanging around my neck. I think the secret is in the tail. But that’s a tale for another Saturday.

    • If squirrels could live as long as humans, I’ll bet it’d be a whole different picture. You’d see some old grey squirrel hobbling along a tree branch, yelling at the young whippersnappers as they’d breeze past him like crazy…. well, squirrels. Get off of my tree, you punks!

  5. Great photo. I could watch them for hours.
