Welcome to another midweek virtual eyesore that we at The Nest like to call Picture Day Wednesday! Since I’m going to be away much of the day today, I’m going to keep this one short and sweet and run with a theme I have yet to exploit in my weekly tribute to shitty photography… signs! If I have a camera and there is an interesting, or even uninteresting sign somewhere in my sights, I’m going to capture it so I can look back on it one day and wonder what in the hell I was thinking when I wasted film digital storage space on that…
Signs like to tell us what we can and can not do, like this one at the local park…
Or this amusing sign outside a Lake Huron restroom…
Some signs tell us where we’re going… like this sign I captured while walking across the Roberto Clemente Bridge in Pittsburgh…
There are signs that serve to warn us of impending danger…
Signs that let us know we’re about to get ripped off…
Signs that pretend to be informative, but are really just paid advertisements…
Signs from above…
Even in the secular domain…
And lastly, your chance to buy the property next door to me….. had it not already been bought and flipped in the four years since I took this picture…
And thus concludes my tribute to some of the signs I have in my archive. Come back next week for pictures that will hopefully not try to tell you what to do…
Where was that by Lake Huron? Glenview Il…? I will never forget the one you posted from podunkville mich (my hometown). You find the most awesome signs.
I had to look it up… I stayed in Southgate on my Detroit trip, and the park along the “lake” was in the area around Wyandotte because I took the road my hotel was on east until I hit the water…
Ew..the lake is beautiful when you go more north. Did you go to Glenview, IL.? It is neqr and dear to my heart.
If so, it would have been on one of the three trips my family made up that way for bowling tournaments between 1989 and 1995… but I’m thinking those were all in southern suburbs…. except Northbrook is really ringing a bell as one of the locations. I certainly drove by Glenview on my way to Milwaukee in 2008…
OMG! It just hit me while I was going through the post again why you had Glenview on your mind! LOL, that church is within walking distance of my home. Not sure why they chose the name Glenview, but it is in my hometown…
Hahaha…funny. Well that solves it! 🙂
When I worked in the city, I took the train from Northbrook. Fun place.
Near…
I like the no smoking sign … it’s annoying if 87 little people beg for a cigarette :o) we got such a barrel to burn leaves and wooden things of the garden… the label says R-active… I can only imagine what it means… or better not …
Sounds like it may have once been used at Chernobyl… does it glow in the dark?
….yes… the red stripe under the letters really glows in the dark … weird… no wonder that we got it for free :O)
You would have enjoyed capturing some funniest as well as weirdest signs/advertisements here in small towns of India. I liked the expression on your squirrel face in the last pic.
I’ve seen some funny signs posted from around the world… Japan seems to have the market cornered on strange signs that are funny to Americans.
Funnily enough a couple of days a go I Instragrammed a sign I saw which read “Please do not disturb the bricks” 🙂 And also a picture of a squirrel in action (which, until I post another picture, is on my blog home page border if you want to see it!).
YAY for the squirrel in action! He looks like he is getting the heck out of town before he ends up being used in a Friday Fictioneers prompt!
Disturbing bricks is just rude… I can’t believe they’d even need a sign for that!
Apparently without all our inane signage, we cannot exist. No doubt when future archeologists look through the rubble of our civilization, they’re going to decide that we were the stupidest society to ever populate the earth, as evidenced by signs that told us how and when to do everything.
And just wait until they get a load of our warning labels…
DO NOT USE THIS CHARCOAL GRILL INDOORS. KEEP RAT POISON OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. DO NOT STICK HAND UNDER LAWN MOWER WHILE BLADE IS IN MOTION….
At least they’ll know why we went extinct…
OMP! These are hilarious. There is a street not too far away in our hood that is called EASY STREET. That’s funny. But what makes it funnier is the sign about the sign that reads NO OUTLET. Snorts with piggy laughter like Beavis and Butthead. XOXO – Bacon
Well, if I lived on Easy Street I wouldn’t want to end up anywhere else! What a great place for a dead end…
Snorts with piggy laughter. We always snort when we pass that street in the hood. It’s jut too fun. XOXO – Bacon
These are great! Being a person that always takes things a little too literally at first, I always get a kick out of funny signs. We have one in the neighborhood that looks like it’s telling you that you’re at a teeter totter crossing. 🙂
That might be the playground for Slow Children…
I have seen the signs! My favorites are still “Slow Children Playing” because it is so open to interpretation. These days, sign-makers favor wordless signs with an image that we are all supposed to recognize, but usually don’t. Especially not at high speed. I always hope that the cryptic sign I just missed wasn’t warning me that this road ends at a cliff …
The Slow Children sign that was near my grandparents house has some little stick figure rugrat running around at 80 mph on it, which kinda defeated the whole purpose. I figure the slower they are, the easier it will be to run them down…
I’ll just pee behind the building and hope that no one is watching.
There are surveillance cameras everywhere now. You can’t even take a leak behind a bush without some security prevert seeing you….
I’ll keep that in mind…
Imagine Amy buying the house and waving gaily and frantically at you in her best singing voice.”everything’s coming up SQUIRRELS! tra la LA!” LOL!
Hopefully she spent all that money on the dishwasher and has none left to love near me!
No Tesla video to go along with this? I’m disappointed.
Had I included an audio, it would have been the Five Man Electrical Band original. Like most early 90’s music, I don’t like the Tesla cover… though it put the original “Signs” back on the map for a few years…
Really? Maybe it’s because it’s what I heard first, but I prefer the Tesla version
Oh dude… better avoid that Mc Walk… it can cause a thunderstorm in your 7 stomachs. We got a trashbag ban here because the foxes &cats who visited the bags when they were out. We got a huge rubbish skip for all in our street what they placed directly next to our garage…. uuuuh!
