The Scream

The Howard Dean of squirrels.

The Howard Dean of squirrels.

At first blush, squirrels don’t seem like the type of critters who have a whole lot to say.  There is no “meow,” “woof,” “moo,” or “oink” onomatopoeia term associated with the sqturday squirrel logospecies.  But they are anything but silent when they get worked up… and whether their tailfeathers got ruffled by a rival sciurine, a pesky pet or a curious human… you can bet they’re going to retreat to a safe haven and proceed to voice their displeasure at the annoyance loud enough for the entire neighborhood to hear it.

This week’s Saturday Squirrel, though, may be taking the act of voicing his opinion just a little too far.  He’s obviously quite worked up about something, and is shouting for the entire world to hear his rage.  Who does this loudmouthed squirrel think he is, Donald Trump?  That maw of his certainly is YUGE, but at least he has better hair…

Have a great, but hopefully quiet weekend everyone!

  1. I must say that squirrels do have an amazing range of screeches and screams and I love hearing them up in the trees practicing their vocals and/or warning others of their kind there’s a predator in town. Or maybe they’re just saying “par-tay at my nest tonight”……

    Howl at the sun?

Nothing worse than a pissed off squirrel…

I never knew they did that. Let it out, squirrel. I hope you feel better afterwards.

Even squirrels need to vent now and again. True enough, I have no idea what noise a squirrel makes!

    • It’s hard to describe what it sounds like. It’s not quite like a squawking bird, though it’s what I usually think is making the noise at first until I see the squirrel raising all holy hell up in the tree. But one in a tree two houses down from me was screeching loud enough once for me to hear him inside my house… they can make some noise!

I never knew they did that either. Nor do I know what they sound like. Squirrels going into Banshee mode! 🙂

  7. Growing up in the woods (do you see a common thread here?), my bedroom was adjacent to a nearly flat roof (a room added on by my parents who were always building something). In the warmer months, the crows and the squirrels held daily war games. Just before or at dawn, as early at 4 in the morning.

Squirrels are ANYTHING but quiet and the crows — OH the crows.

I think it was a turf war and that roof was the disputed zone. Between the furious chattering of the squirrels and the cacophony of the yelling crows (they do NOT caw — crows YELL), little 8-year-old Marilyn is at the window screaming “SHUT UP ALREADY.” Even then, the animals ignored me. Shadows of many long years to come with dogs ignoring me unless I have something edible in hand.

    Squirrels have quite a vocabulary!

    • Squirrels and birds don’t listen to me either. My cats barely do… just enough to know what they need to do in order for me to keep feeding them and not throw them outside to the coyotes. OK, we don’t have any coyotes near my house, or anything else I know of that will eat a cat. But THEY don’t know that, so that’s all that counts…

That’s a great shot of Donald Squirrel! Our fox squirrels chatter, bark and squeak relentlessly. I have had to go out and speak to them on occasion… 🙂

  9. What a YUGELY funny post. I had no idea the wee fellahs yelled. He probably just read too many news reports. ❤

  10. I had no idea. But I can’t identify half of the outside noises I hear!

Wow, its mouth looks yuge! It kind of looks like its howling. Thank goodness that’s one noise they can’t make. I love hearing a dog howl but, with at least a dozen squirrels living in the strip of trees next to my house, howling would get old really fast.

I was just getting ready to post a picture of a squirrel that was screaming bloody murder out on my deck last week!
