I need to get this tree sap out of my fur!
After my next door neighbors (blessedly) moved out five years ago, I took it upon myself the following summer to confiscate the birdbath that had been sitting in their front yard. It wasn’t like anyone else was using it. Not long after I committed that misdemeanor, I featured my first ever squirrel photo shoot on this blog using the birdbath as a centerpiece… a post so old, that I was still two weeks away from officially launching my Saturday Squirrel series! While it’s inspired a few other SS posts along the way, the reality is that I don’t often get the chance to film my squirrels partaking of the bath’s typically dry confines…
HEY!!! Could I get some water in this tub!? I gotta look fresh for my date tonight!
Well, this guy a few weeks ago was certainly looking to take a refreshing dip in my secondhand birdbath… though he didn’t exactly find what he was looking for after he made the leap.
Nevermind…. I guess I’ll just start cleaning myself! How do cats put up with this?
Sorry little guy. The birdbath is only properly filled when it rains. But at least thanks to that powerwashing tongue, you look all spiffy and clean for your appearance as this week’s Saturday Squirrel!

it’s a clever idea to take bath in an empty berdbath…. we can learn a lot from squirrels… but maybe the berdbath is filled with champagner extra dry?

Guess you haven’t had much rain lately? I’d go pour a bucket into it on principle. You never know who might show up to the pool party 🙂
Well…. it hasn’t rained like it did in July and August lately. But it only takes the birdbath a day or two to completely dry out…. or maybe the squirrels tip it over when I’m not looking.
Sam likes dry shampoo too since he despises water. Good thinking SS.

Shame on you. You should be keeping the bath properly filled for your furry friends. Maybe add some deckchairs and parasols. Make it a real hot weather squirrel go-to destination!
They should feel fortunate that I provide the acorns and occasional ear of corn. I’m not about to open up a squirrel resort and spa! The neighbors would show up with the torches if I did that…
The squirrels around here like a dry birdbath it seems……I go back there to fill it with water and find it empty of water and full of acorn shells and sunflower seed leftovers. They like to sit in the bowl and eat – they never clean up after themselves though. The “help” (aka ME) cleans it out and gives them some bathwater and a couple of days later water is gone and shells are there. I think they prefer a raised platform picnic area to a bathing spot……..!

If they hadn’t bolted for the Golden Coast, I’d have sicced the Broomhildas on those lazy squirrels! Make them clean up those messy seeds, or get severely barked at!
Aw, so cute! I like that it was independent enough to give itself a bath even without water. My spoiled squirrels would probably just sit there and stare at the house, waiting for me to come fill it for them.
