Hold Up At The Disco!

I'm only a guest of The Nest!

I’m only a guest of The Nest!

The time has finally come to chill out with the month of October now upon us.  It’s time to get out those sweaters, hot chocolate, and of course on Mondays.. those all-important ear muffs.  The seasons may change and the calendar pages may flip, but The Nest will always start off your week with another lost ditty we saved from music history’s burning leafpile.  It’s time for the next Fall classic to the played from the acorn stash we like to call the Dusty Vinyl Archive!  DJ Scratchy is always keeping things cool behind the turntable… and while the Sponkies may be missing the beginning of Spring in their homeland, they certainly won’t miss out on the leaves changing colors like Dennis Rodman’s hair…

While everyone loves to make fun of Americans’ tendency to be idiots when it comes to simple world geography, we certainly don’t hold any patents on looking stupid.  You might expect a band named Ottawan to be from, you know, Canada since Ottawa is only the country’s freaking capital city.  But no, it was actually a duo made up of two Caribbean singers which was put together by French record producers to become disco superstars stars in the Eastern Hemisphere.  Can’t we have a little truth in advertising here?  After all, the rock groups Chicago and Boston were both formed in those cities.  It works even with bigger place names, as the band Europe was actually from Europe, Kansas originated in the state of Oz Kansas, and Manfred Mann’s Earth Band hailed from…. you guessed it, Earth!

Dammit Asia! You had to ruin the point I was making...

Dammit Asia! You had to ruin the point I was making…

Ottawan jumped on the disco bandwagon after the US had long since moved on from having Saturday Night Fever.  As a result, the group never charted here at all… only in a handful of European countries and Down Under.  So why do I even know this group exists?  Because this song gets played occasionally on Music Choice’s Party Favorites channel… and I absolutely love it!  Here is Ottawan’s 1981 non-US smash hit, “Hands Up (Give Me Your Heart)”

Yes, it’s another happy-making song!  You know by now how much I love pop songs like this, and can’t understand why they wouldn’t make anyone else tickled pink when they hear it as well…

Woohoo! Get your hands up and your nuts out!

Woohoo! Get your hands up and your nuts out!

This isn’t even Ottawan’s biggest “hit.”  That honor belongs to their 1979 song “D-I-S-C-O,” which I listened to for the first time while composing this post, and…. well, that song’s more for the tastes of those who still keep an emergency leisure suit or two in their moth-eaten closet.  Like this guy…

Legs up! Baby legs up!...

Legs up! Baby, legs up!…

I’ll return next Monday to rob your sanity with another internationally known earworm…

  1. it was the party-song n°1 for a loooong time here… and it still is … probably because even european people are able to sing the refrain even when they are schlonkered :o)

thanks for the happy song to welcome in this happy season )

  3. Never heard this one but I see why you like it – it’s got a big case of the “cheery/happies”……these days we need as much of that stuff as we can get! Especially with the election coming…….

  4. Hands up, dancing and clapping. And Im not even schlonkered. 😉

  5. Wow, that is catchy and oh so happy. Hands up! Hands down great post.
It immediately made me think of one of my Summer of 2016 Road Trip favorites:

I expected to hate it since I loathe disco and most pop, but I didn’t! Still, I’m glad I never roller skated in short shorts, knee socks and a head band to it. Oh, that’s a lie. Whenever I went to the roller rink I wanted to be one the cool, coordinated kids skating around out there instead of the one hanging onto the wall for dear life.

    • I could skate just fine…. I just couldn’t stop. And nobody dressed like that at our sixth grade skating parties…. if they did, the old man with the flashlight who patrolled the rink would have probably thrown them out on their legwarmers!

Love it! What a fun song

I’m not a disco fan unless it’s ABBA.

    • That’s funny, because I don’t even consider ABBA to be disco. Dancing Queen was a typical sappy piece of 70’s dreck that got hijacked by disco fans. I like just about everything else ABBA did other than that song, though…

Man! years ago!! Time trip…….:) luv it! T.

Wow, another one I like! Fascinating. I love silent movies so the video was fantastic. This didn’t sound that disco to me. Well, not the Saturday Night Fever disco I dislike so much. Actually really enjoyed this on.

  13. Oh the song is catchy … BUT WHAT A FANTASTIC VIDEO!! That’s pure gold! I can hardly wait to show it to Garry. The only thing stopping me is his being asleep!

    • I’m not sure if that was string together as an official video or as a fan video… but I did think you might like the old silent and western clips! They don’t make ’em (movies and music) like that anymore…

Here I am late again! Great song, I’ve never heard of the band but it’s a pretty well-known song. According to Wiki it charted in the UK at number 3, so that explains how I know it.
