It’s a great time to give thanks for all of the great and not-so-great pop music that has enriched our lives and occasionally drove us up the wall. And what better way to show our gratitude to earworms past than with The Nest’s Monday tradition of serving up another fully stuffed turkey classic from the cornucopia of lost records we like to call the Dusty Vinyl Archive! DJ Scratchy’s carving up another slice of 80’s music heaven today that the Sponkies found buried underneath all of those nasty fruitcakes we’ve been gifted over the years. Looks like the timer’s popped up on this moldy oldie…
There are so many artists and bands that seemed to define the 80’s, that it’s impossible to imagine that decade in music without them coming to the forefront of your mind. Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, Duran Duran, Debbie Gibson, Culture Club, Poison, Synch…..
Wait a minute….. Synch!?!? What in the hell is a Synch? The band was apparently so forgettable that they don’t even have a Wiki page. But at least their lead singer Jimmy Harnen does. What, you’re still scratching your head? Are you sure you lived through the 80’s? Maybe this image will help jog your memory…
Let’s face it, only hardcore 80’s music fans with photographic memories have any idea that Jimmy Harnen and a band named Synch even existed despite the fact that they had a Top 10 hit in 1989. Yep, no kidding, Synch’s a bonafide one hit wonder that can’t even cash in on the OHW craze. It’s possible you’ve even heard of their lone Hot 100 entry…. the mashup of sappy mellow shlock and power ballad, “Where Are You Now?”
Familiar? Yes? No? Maybe?
“Where Are You Now” was originally recorded in 1985 by Synch, and became a modest local and eventually regional hit in the mid-Atlantic states. But it fizzled out at #77 on the charts and was quickly forgotten about the first time….. until 1989.
’89 was a strange year in the pop music world, as one of the trends seemed to be re-releasing, and in some cases revamping lesser known hits for a second round of radio airplay love. 1989 made bigger hits out of second chance songs like Moving Pictures’ “What About Me?,” Real Life’s “Send Me An Angel,” Benny Mardones’ “Into the Night,” and this song… which was now credited to “Jimmy Harnen with Synch” since apparently after even just a couple years out of the spotlight, Synch had zero name recognition…
I’ll be back with another world famous earworm next Monday…
oh wow… he looked way different in the 80’s… well me too LOL
I think there was more hair in the 80’s. I know I had more…
Nope, doesn’t ring a bell.
Milli Vanilli rang my bell.
I miss the 80’s.
Can you lip sync a bell ringing?
Snorts with piggy laughter. Kind of sound like Air Supply… you know in a weird way. XOXO – Bacon
Maybe like Air Supply if they decided that for a minute or two each song, they should actually try rocking a little bit…
Snorts with piggy laughter. This is so true… well at least dad says that. XOXO – Bacon
I don’t recognize the song but I recognize Jimmy’s haircut – it looks just like my mom’s!
LOL! Maybe they go to the same stylist. I guess it wasn’t uncommon for 80’s musicians to have women’s hair styles…

Kool Aid will never go out of style…. though it would be fun to see Kool Aid Man take on the Hawaiian Punch dude. The juice would really fly, oh yeah!
I was in Israel for the 1980s and they were playing American Rock from the 70s. I think by the time I left, a bit of the early 80s may have arrived … but not much. And I can’t even remember what I DID hear, much less what I didn’t. I really am hopeless.
I will keep helping you remember what you never learned in the first place every Monday. Or at least the worst of what American music had to offer…
Do NOT remember that one and never cared for the schlock type stuff anyway……I would have fallen asleep to this one. zzzzzzzzz
Pam
I think they did this one on purpose to sound all schlocky, then wake you up once it starts rocking at the chorus. “Schlocky” didn’t get the dreaded red underline, so it must actually be a word! Who knew…
Never heard of him, his band or his song. Best left forgotten I think, not my kind of thing at all 🙂
Surely there’s some one-hit-wonder heavy rock/metal out there? I’m voting for one of those.
I’m sure there are… and who knows, I might even play one sometime! Alas, the lost music world is full of Jimmy Harnens…
