More Pussy

Slurp, slurp, slurp...

Slurp, slurp, slurp…

It’s Picture Day Wednesday…. and hey, no giggling at Biskit!  Don’t knock it until you’ve picture daytried it.  If we were all as flexible as cats, we’d all do it as well.  Don’t deny it…

It’s been a couple of weeks since I found out Ody somehow contracted my family’s medical plague of diabetes, and since I gratuitously use my cute animals to try and attract more people to my blog, I figured you might want an update on that situation…

Starting off with low doses of insulin didn’t seem to be doing a whole lot of good.  With each weekly checkup, his blood sugar steadily rose from 337 to 345 to…… gulp, 500-and something nasty.  BTW, if you want the nastiest possible litter box, find yourself a cat with a blood sugar well over the legal limit…

Thankfully, Ody's lardass days are over...

Thankfully, Ody’s lardass days are over…

To make matters even worse… after that dreaded visit (which was the Monday before last), my frustrated-with-being-dragged-to-the-vet-every-week cat decided to make a run for it when we got home.  Out the garage door he went, and I unsuccessfully tried to chase him around the house… losing him in the backyard.  It was cold, and my strictly indoor cat who was an eyelash from going into a sugar coma decided to run and hide from me.  To add insult to injury and really piss me off, he was costing me my much needed beauty sleep since I had to wake up in the middle of the afternoon for the appointment…

Awwwww, ain't that too fucking bad!!!

Awwwww, ain’t that too fucking bad!!!

After over two hours of waiting up to see if he’d finally come crawling back to my door, he finally showed up where I least expected him…. at the kitchen door.  He must’ve found a hell of a place to hide in my garage, because I’d checked there and inside the house to make sure he didn’t circle around and run back inside.  After beating his ass giving him a stern lecture, I started Ody on his new, much higher dose of insulin.  The water guzzling stopped, and his blood sugar was a much better 136 this past Monday.  Ody went to this appointment in my jail cell pet carrier to thwart any more escape attempts from Stalag 13, and somehow that bastard knew it was vet day because he instantly hid as soon as I started the car…

Well, the good news for Ody is he doesn’t have to be checked again for a whole month…

The bad news is, him and Biskit are both due for their yearly shots in a couple weeks!

That's it... I'm going to start destroying all of these stupid things ES likes...

I’ll have more adventures from hell next Wednesday…

I hope that the shots work for him. A sick kitty is no damn fun.

poor kitty and poor ES…..trying to get a cat to do anything is hard enough but the vet….torture for all involved. I know…..I have the scars to prove it. LOL Hope it gets better ….for both of you.

    • I haven’t had to fight him to give him his twice a day shots yet, so that’s good. It’s just loading his unwilling butt into the car when I have to… and of course, the fact that there always has to be either a large or extremely yappy dog in the waiting room every time I go to the vet’s! Ody’s not a fan of canines!

  3. It’s always something, isn’t it. I don’t know how they just know we are about to take them to the vet, but they do. It’s good you got his blood sugar down to almost normal. Blood sugar that high is scary! Diabetes runs in Garry’s family AND mine, so we are always watchful of what we eat and get checked regularly. So far, so good.

Sick pets are really difficult. Not only do they not understand we really ARE doing it for their own good, but because we can’t explain to them why they feel so miserable, they probably think we are punishing. So we get the best of the pet owning experience: fear, worry AND guilt. Not to mention vet bills. But you seem to have it under control. Hang on in there.

    • The 500+ scared me, because I’ve twice had to take my Dad to the ER for sugars that high… and I’m surprised Ody wasn’t showing any signs other than “Water… NOW… and lots of it!” He literally had the entire litter box soaked to the bottom in urine. This at least was a better outcome than his brother got five years ago, which was “Oh, he has this deadly disease that is incurable and is going to die before his second birthday….” I’ll take having to give Ody 730 insulin shots a year over that…

  4. Make sure Santa brings you kevlar type body amour for these types of cat sessions.

    • I’ve learned many of the tricks and techniques to keeping flailing cat claws away from my raw flesh. Most of them I picked up during a nasty flea infestation I had a while back that forced me to occasionally (gasp!) bathe both of my cats. As grouchy as cats can sometimes seem, it’s chilling to see your cat have that look on its face that says “I don’t care if you are the hand that feeds me, you are going to die for this!”

  5. Hope the new dose works the magic on Ody – I’m sure you do too! I don’t know much about diabetes but that blood sugar level was WAY HIGH – that I know!

    Pam

    • I wish I hadn’t learned about diabetes either, but it’s been a part of my knowledge since birth due to my Dad. I gave him shots for years, and now I get to give them to my cat. Hopefully my cat will never have to give them to me!

  6. ody & biskit…..fotoz like yurz iz seen round trour towne everee day !!!!! rock on doodz ~~~~~~ N ody….trust uz on thiz, even tho we noe it pizzez ya off two noe kinda end; dadz just tryin ta help; honest ta cod….we iz buzzed happee yur sugar level came down ….be jezuz buddy….500 iz like flippin inn sane ~~~ ♥♥♥

    • Ody’s really no different than I am when I know I have to go to the doctor… or like right now when I’m battling a toothache and refuse to call a dentist. It would be funny to see Ody and Biskit corral me into the car and force me to go, though….

  7. Bradley says:

It’s always amazing to me how they know it’s time to run and hide.

  8. I’ve had to reschedule vet appointments because of hiding cats. They always seem to know where they’re going.

    • I try to outsmart them by strategically closing doors beforehand to leave them fewer places to hide. Sometimes it works…. other times, it’s a neverending game of chasing the cat all over the house!

  9. Trisha says:

Damn cats, they’re so good at making everything as hard as it can possibly be! I’m glad to hear the new, higher dose is working out and that you were able to catch Ody. I bet he was real proud of himself for escaping and staying hidden that long!

    • I don’t think he’d make it very long out in the wild on his own… even though he still has his claws and is big for a housecat. With all of the nasty fluids my jalopy leaks all over the garage floor, I was probably more worried when I found out he’d been hiding in there than I was with him outside after dark…

  10. draliman says:

I’m glad Ody is feeling better 🙂
How is it that cats always know when you’re about to force them into their kitty carrier?

    • Funny thing is, Ody hadn’t been in that carrier since he was a kitten. Once the boys grew, the smaller one (first Spilly then Biskit) always got the “pleasure” of being crammed into the carrier while the other was carried by hand. I only put him in there this last time to prevent any more daring escapes from my brand of torture…
