Simply having a wonderful Christmas time…

‘Tis the season for no reason… and if you’d like to take a break from those same old horrible Christmas tunes that will bring out the Grinch in even the most cheery soul, then it’s time to take off the earmuffs so you can tune in to another Monday miracle we’ve dug out of the vault full of classic coal we like to call the Dusty Vinyl Archive!  DJ Scratchy’s got her Santa Hat and stockings on, while the Sponkies are out a wassailing to a lost holiday gem from the master of the twisted Christmas…

On a Christmas afternoon radio program sometime about a decade or so ago, I heard for the first and only time (at least prior to just now) a song that has become one of my favorite parodies of a well known hit…. holiday themed or not.  Sure, you know Weird Al Yankovic…. you’d have to be living under a moldy rock not to have.  But for those who think Weird Al is a bit too straight-laced for their taste… there’s an alternative in the much lesser-known Seattle-based disc jockey Bob Rivers

It’s funny that fellow blogger Trisha brought up Rivers in my past DVA post on Weird Al, because I’d never heard of him before and had no idea he did the song I’m going to feature today until I looked it up for this post!  No, it won’t be that chipmunk song…. if you really want to hear that classic, click on the link in the caption (Don’t be shy, my links don’t bite).  For this week’s featured song, however, we’re going to hear Bob roast the Beach Boys instead in this ode to the Griswold-like tradition of turning your home into a mini version of Las Vegas…. “Decorations”

The cool light display put together for this song’s video actually increases my enjoyment of the wonderful plays on words and rhymes that are the hallmark of any great song parody.

While Rivers has done a plethora of parodies on a variety of topics in his three decade career, it’s sending up the holidays that he’s most prolific at and has had his best commercial success with.  You can find all kinds of quirky Christmas presents from Bob Rivers by searching for his songs on You Tube.  I was surprised to discover that I was aware of another of his Christmas classics, the Black Sabbath parody “I Am Santa Claus!

Ozzy is speechless..... which is probably a good thing.

I’ll be back with another earworm you won’t want to return to the store on the day after Christmas…

  1. we saw a smurf decoration today and there was santa who sat in his sled while the horses had a break and spent it the same way like the reindeers in your furst pic… I’m not really in christmas mood this year, but that was a christmas scene I liked :o)

  2. Great…now my brain can alternate between I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas and this Beach Boy wanna-be ear worm. Guess it wasn’t bad enough with just the Hippo song…now this selection gets added to it. Gah!!!

    • I hate the Hippo song… they used to play it a lot with Dominick the Donkey at work, only Dominick is one of the cutest Christmas songs ever! HeeHaw HeeHaw HeeHaw HeeHaw HeeHaw HeeHaw HeeHaw HeeHaw …..

  3. I have never been as enthusiastic about season lighting displays on private homes (love them on public buildings, though) as other people. A little light is pretty, a lot of light is a lot of light.

I love parody in music and words and movies and books. Right now, the whole world seems to be an unintentional self-parody. Happy seasonal greetings of the non-denominational kind 🙂

    • It’s a family and kids thing, I think. I remember the days (back when gas was cheap) when we’d all pile up in the station wagon and ride around looking at all the pretty light displays. I’m quite past that point in my life… when I see an extravagant display these days I feel like those old air raid wardens from the cartoons of the 40’s…. “PUT OUT THAT LIGHT!!!!”

    Paul’s Christmas song blows.

Ha ha hahaha. Nice one! I like a good parody, me. And seasonal too.

  6. Ladybuggz says:

That was Great…especially the part about keeping the neighbors up all night! Ha! Loved it so much I shared it on Facebook!! 🙂 T.

  7. I hadn’t heard of Bob Rivers. He is soooo funny! The chipmunk song killed me! HaHaHaHa!

    • The chipmunk song is perfectly evil… and I love it even more since I can’t stand that Chipmunks Christmas song! Bob also has an AC/DC parody titled “Dirty Deeds Done With Sheep” that is classic and almost funnier than “Big Balls!”

      • Oh! I will check it out now and remember, its a long way to the shop if ya want a sausage roll! Do Americans eat sausage rolls? I am thinking yes butt they probably have a better name for it. ❤
