Pumpkin Poopers

Nothing good in this gourd...

Nothing good in this gourd…

sqturday squirrel logoEvery November 1st I throw my Squirrel O’Lantern out under the backyard tree in hopes that I can get some pretty neat pictures of my squirrels crawling through it’s intricately carved designs and stealing the seedy guts I’ve re-inserted for their enjoyment.  With the exception of this really odd occurrence, the results have always been horribly disappointing.  Despite all of those neat photos and videos I see online of frisky squirrels digging in for their own version of pumpkin pie, my sciurines seem to want no part of this Halloween tradition.  Above you see the “best” photo I got this past Fall of any interest in my pumpkin’s rotting corpse.  Apparently my squirrels are fussy eaters…

You want me to be pooping orange for the next week!?!?

He may not be a Halloween Squirrel, but he’s a Saturday Squirrel nonetheless….

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. that’s brave… I wouldn’t come near a corpse…

One year after we threw the jack-o-lantern into the ravine I saw Fuzzy taking chunks of it up into his nest. But only one year, all the other years the pumpkin corpse has just decayed where it landed. Kind of wonder what there was about that one particular pumpkin that made it delectable…

    Hiya beastie!

  4. That is so sweet. I was going to throw my jack-o-lanterns out but they imploded and turned black with the frost. I’m still putting out corn and peanuts. My squirrels are happy.

  5. The deer actually ate our pumpkin corpse this year…….I had “heaved” it down into the woods behind us and OF COURSE it hit a tree and landed at the base so I just left it and next time I looked out the deer were having their way with it (so to speak).

  6. Spoiled by the better eats you feed them the whole year round?

Maybe the colour’s putting him off. I guess in early November the furry guys have their pick of food.

He looks a little pissed that there isn’t something good in there! The squirrels here chewed chunks off my jack-o-lantern but didn’t eat any of it. They’ve even turned up their cute little noses at pumpkin seeds that I put out. Maybe they view pumpkins as a vegetable. Blech!

    • I guess next year I’ll know better than to expect them to feast upon such a yucky dish! I’ll bet if I tried to grow pumpkins in my backyard, they’d be digging in though…

      • Trisha says:

I would bet with you on that one! They’d probably gnaw through the vine before the pumpkins ever reached the size of a marble. I don’t think I shared what they did to my lace leaf maple seedling. I nurtured that thing for two years and, one day last summer, I found it gnawed in half!
