Typical Males

Where earworms meet eyeworms.

Welcome in to another glorious Monday morning, the day where The Nest never does anything nice and easy.  That means it’s time for us to raise the roof on that Thunderdome of classy classics we like to call the Dusty Vinyl Archive!  Allow Miss Scratchy to be your private deejay for this week’s lost hit dance while the Sponkies attempt to run your American Express card through the new chip reader.  Here’s another forgotten fave that’s simply the best…

As hard as it may be to believe in the current pop music world we live in where careers generally expire before the last zits have cleared off pretty Photoshopped faces… once upon a time, an artist could find themselves at the pinnacle of their success while also being on the wrong side of 40.  Tina Turner overcame more than just her “advanced age” to become the queen of 80’s rock, but also an abusive relationship with her former husband and music partner Ike that soured Tina’s early taste of success in the 70’s.  Tina Turner’s 1984 #1 hit “What’s Love Got To Do With It” put her back on the map in a big way and the hits just kept coming from there…

You should be able to afford a comb now, Tina.

But even Tina became a victim of the corporate radio razor that sliced through 80’s music like a Ginsu knife, with her comeback hit being about the only song of hers that still gets good airplay in the era of Taylor Swift and Adele.  Of her collection of lost 80’s hits, the one I like best is also one of the most hidden.  Other than checking it out occasionally on YouTube, I can’t think of the last time I heard her 1987 #13 hit “What You Get Is What You See” anywhere else…

For a song that is supposedly about yearning for more than just a physical studmuffin as a love interest, Tina sure does pack this video with wall to wall hunky beefcakes that are probably shallower than a kiddie pool.  Not to mention, a few of them may not actually be interested in Tina at all…

Whoa…… down boys!

And since I love adding bonus factoids to these DVA posts, did you know that despite being an iconic part of the American music scene, Tina Turner is no longer a citizen of the US?  Tina moved to Switzerland in 1994 and officially became a Swiss Miss four years ago, renouncing her US citizenship in the process.  There’s one expatriating celebrity you can’t blame on the current President…

Hey Justin, I heard Antarctica’s lovely this time of year…

I’ll be back with another forgotten hit that’s more than just a handsome face next Monday…

  1. Tina – amazing lady – truly. The “Biebs” needs to be an EXPORT and soon.

I vaguely remember this song and I didn’t know Tina Turner had moved to Switzerland.

It’s too bad we can’t vote out the celebrities that we want to leave. I can think of at least 20 more to send to Antarctica with JB….

Is this the first time Clem has appeared on the album in Scratchy’s hand?

    • I agree on voting out celebrities. it always makes me laugh when those lists comes out of celebs who threaten to move to Canada or Europe if so and so is elected President. Most of them are people we would happily put on a slow boat to China!

The badge for the DVA has remained the same since day one, so you’re just noticing Clem after 16 months! That is a parody of this infamous bad album cover….

      • Trisha says:

LOL! You did a great parody of that album! And improved on it. I’d much rather look at Clem. I can’t believe it took me 16 months to notice that detail though…. My mind is disturbingly unreliable these days!

Love the song. Surprise! Tina Turner is great. The guys in this video are hideous.

  4. ody N biskit ……tina turner rockz….all wayz haz…all wayz will …her & bowie did an awesum duet at her concert with de song “let’s dance ” !!! ☺☺

  5. Nobody could sell a song better than Tina. No matter what was on the video, she was — is — one HELL of a singer.

  6. draliman says:

I’ve never really been a fan of the Swiss songstress myself.

  7. The Swiss Miss still has all the right moves! Now if we can just get rid of a certain Cannucklehead who overplayed music not to mention antics are all a bit too much. I’d personally rather hear Taylor or Adele over the Biebs.
