It’s time to break out your ice buckets and party like it’s Twenty-Fourteen! In honor of three years of Music Mondays on The Nest, for the month of June we’re flashing back to the series that first put my favorite earworms on the map. And so DJ Scratchy trades in the vault and key for a vest and badge while spinning another aisle surfing shopping tune for Mecca Muzak Monday!
While the Dusty Vinyl Archive focuses on the lost and forgotten songs of the past, MMM gave a spotlight to underrated and underplayed songs of the new millennium that I’d have likely never been exposed to were it not for them being on the playlist of my worknights in retail. In this month’s brief Triple-M reprisal you’ll get to hear a nifty cover of an 80’s classic, the song that snapped an incredible record streak by a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, and a song with Satanic references that…. wait, what in the hell would be be playing that at Mecca for anyway!?!?
But we’re gonna start the month with a song that was a worldwide hit……… everywhere but the US, that is.
Milky Chance is a German folk group who….. yes, I realize you probably never expected to see the phrase “German folk group” in a post at The Nest on a Monday, or any other day for that matter. Stay with me, this song’s good. “Stolen Dance” was released by the group on YouTube back in April 2013, and later that same year on Milky Chance’s debut album Sadnecessary. It found its way onto Mecca Radio in the post-CD era, and it’s not half bad.
According to the ever reliable (And ever in need of money) Wikipedia, “Stolen Dance” was a Top 10 hit in the following countries…. Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, The Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and quite possibly Antarctica and the Vatican City as well. Though this song got some love from secondary Billboard charts nobody’s ever heard of before, on the official US Hot 100 “Stolen Dance” reached the lofty rank of #39. At least the UK kinda snubbed the song as well, so we weren’t quite alone in our musical isolationism…
Come back next Monday for some more classic DJ Pon…
it was not really my cup of tea (someone snitched it together with the dance) but it became viral here somehow… and it’s still in the supermarkets and the diy-cowboy store :O) btw: we will follow satans advice… amazon here we come… again ;o)
The version they play at Mecca seems a bit peppier than what’s on YouTube. I guess that just hides the subliminal messages better…
We do not know these … these… creatures. Yeah that’s it – snorts with piggy laughter. XOXO – Bacon
Nope – somehow I missed hearing this one……maybe that wasn’t all together bad? I give it some points for its’ snappy rhythm though………does that count?
Pam
Snappiness is worth something, and alone gives it more redeeming value than anything Bieber did…
I didn’t think it was half bad but Smarty left the room right after it started. I guess he’s not a fan of Miljy Chance! Maybe it has something to do with their name. Dairy products make him vomit….
Their hair wants to make me vomit!
And if Smarty’s lactose intolerant, you may want to remove him before you look at the Saturday Squirrel post…
Nice snappy beat. I ‘spect we will be even more isolationistic in the near future. *Sigh* Thanks for sharing a bit of global muzak.
When only patriotic songs get played on the radio, that’s the day I finally become politically active….
Probably won’t be long now. Lee Greenwood every hour on the hour.
I would probably be on the next bus out of the country if they knew how much I HATE that song!
Draw a number and get in line. LOL
Wow while reading the copy I would have sworn I’d never heard of these people or this song. But I went ahead and hit play just for s&g and what do you know? I do know this song and I had, if the love, quite the fondness for it. But how did I not even know the name? Maybe it was used in an advert?
Somebody investigate this, because I’m too lazy to do it…..ha!
I think everything’s used in some kind of advertising these days. If you read enough YouTube comments, you can usually find every instance any song in the world appeared in pop culture…
They have one more playing on high rotation in German radio here. Though, folk?? Hm … never had put them into that drawer …
That’s Wikipedia for you. Some of their descriptions are a bit of a stretch…. though I’d have never questioned it since there does appear to be a folksy base to “Stolen Dance”…
Nice clicketty click of shoes and all that.
That is a very weird intro…. and I don’t think it’s included in the Mecca cut I hear at night.
ody & biskit….we will hafta give thiz a listen two on de fone when de gurl comez home frum werk…we all sew gotta figure out what de be jezuz iz with de sound card on thiz werk pee cee !!! ♥♥

Doing just well, thanks!
Well don’t puke if you ever see me, my hair looks just like those guys! :0 And as usual, Canada is a very, very, far away country that doesn’t want us to be corrupted by some of U-tubes music! (I’ll check it on my own u-tube)! lol.. 🙂
That’s crazy since this isn’t even an American band, so we can’t be blamed for the musical isolationism this time! Maybe Canada has laws against hair like that you should check into…. 😛
Ya, even my hubby says my hair is criminal! ;0
I’ve never heard of them and the video’s not available here in the UK. So twice-snubbed!
