Eats Shoots And Leaves

Hey!  Why don’t you make like a tree and leave!

That famous language arts mnemonic about the importance of proper comma usage apparently applies to more than just pandas these days.  I caught this guy last week in my front yard tree enjoying nothing less than a little piece of prime foliage.  Is there a nut shortage in my neighborhood I should know about?  Perhaps he hasn’t been getting enough roughage?  What would possess a squirrel to start munching on a leaf of all things?

I’m pretty sure I’ve read before that leaves provide a source of water for squirrels when there isn’t a conveniently located puddle, or when lazy people like me won’t put any water in the birdbath.  Come to think of it, after an April and early May in which at times it seemed like it might never stop raining, the weather’s been much drier lately.  And since squirrels don’t have the money to waste on bottled water like humans do, I guess leaves are the only way to go to keep from shriveling up into a cute, fuzzy little dustpile…

Hey, ya know where I can get a little cheese to put on my salad?

I guess after last week’s junk food post, we must provide equal time with a Saturday Squirrel who isn’t afraid to partake of a healthy meal!

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. In my neighborhood, they do it just to irritate the homeowner from well out of reach. Whether there’s any moisture to be had, remains to be determined. Great shot! Happy weekend.

  2. Good shot of a squirrel whose Mom won’t complain he’s not “eating his greens” like he should. I rarely see a squirrel eating leaves but have seen them pulling off a flower to snack on……I do try to keep my birdbath full – birds ignore it but the squirrels love it!

    • I had never seen a squirrel eating a leaf before either… but he yanked it off the tree and stuck it in his mouth right in front of me! I think he did it intentionally to get on my blog…

What a cutie! I don’t think I’ve seen squirrels munching on a leaves around here. They destroy any plants I put on my deck but their vandalization never seems to be motivated by hunger or thirst. More like an appetite for destruction! You should have seen what they did to the Gerbera Daisy my mother-in-law bought me last year. Completely shredded. It’s impossible to be mad at them though, the little rascals.

Aww 🙂 I didn’t know squirrels ate leaves but it makes sense about using them for the moisture.

  5. Eats, Shoots, And Leaves. It’s an entire movie in four words. I guess you should leave some water. There’s SO much water around here, they’re lucky they don’t drown!

  6. What a cutie. Love the green leaf background. Just about THE perfect squirrel shot.

  7. Don’t let him fool you – there’s a twinkie hidden in his pocket!
