Yes Can Do

This post is sure to ruffle the fringes of John Oates’ porn ‘stash…

All rise!  This blog is now in session!  I may be getting whisked away to my jury duty sentence today (Edit: Nope, they don’t want me today… but I’m still on call for the rest of the week), but not even a court order can keep The Honorable DJ Scratchy from going retro and spinning another retail earworm in our June revival of Mecca Muzak Mondays!  This week’s featured gem would plead “no contest” to the charges of being yet another cover of a classic 80’s song.  But our blue-maned arbiter would emphatically exonerate it on the fact that it’s so fucking awesome (Yes, that’s a legal term).  Enough of this sidebar… let’s play Exhibit A!

Today we’re gonna have a talk about the birds and the bees!

Somebody’s gonna get stung tonight…

No, wait!!!  Not….. that talk.  No, this is about the 21st Century indie pop group The Bird and The Bee.

The bird is on the left, the bee on the right.

Singer Inara George and producer Greg Kurstin make up this oddly named duo that makes even odder sounding music that has rather anonymously invaded just about every sector of pop culture.  When your debut EP contains a song by the name of “Fucking Boyfriend,” you’ve earned the right to sit at the musical version of the cool table.  In 2010, our flying pest duo decided to release an entire album of Hall & Oates cover songs.  I can’t blame you if you thought that the music of Daryl and John was perfectly fine as it was… this was a pretty daring project.  Say it isn’t so…

Mecca, and apparently whatever conglomeration gathers together muzak playlists for all retail stores these days, picked up on one of the cuts from this tribute album and it got a lot of play when Mecca Radio reemerged last year.  Prepare to hear this totally rad version of “I Can’t Go For That”…

If I had been aware of this song’s existence two years ago, it would have been a lock for a very high spot on the Cover Song Countdown I did in 2015.  The Bird’s singing is rather weird, but it somehow perfectly compliments the even stranger computerized musical track supplied by our producer Bee.  If you don’t like this, then you’re very clearly out of touch…

Sorry, but there’s no Maneater puns in today’s post.

And I’m out of time…

I’ll have the Mecca karaoke machine fired back up for you next Monday, should I not end up sequestered somewhere…

Well, as an 80s cover of an early 80s song I guess it’s okay. I liked Hall &

Oops…Oates in the 70s but none of the 80s stuff. No big surprise. This cover is true to the original just more 80-ified.

      • I like just about everything H&O except the crap from their last album before the breakup, where they seemed more focused on trying to make weird videos rather than good music. I like the original song that this covers just blows away in my mind…

      • crimsonowl63 says:

That’s cool. This cover is an okay version of the song if you like the original. It’s quite a bit too 80s sounding for my taste. If I had to pick between the two I’d take the original. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any of their videos….

      • I am a huge fan of 80’s music videos, and with the exception of Family Man, most of Hall & Oates videos sucked. You aren’t missing anything…

      • crimsonowl63 says:

That’s good to know. Where I lived didn’t get cable till 1991 so kinda missed the 80s videos. I had to rent Thriller to see it lol. I do like that

  3. An interesting selection this week. My verdict is nothing does Hall & Oates justice like the real deal 🙂
P.S. good luck with the jury duty this week whether you serve or sit out.

  4. Piglove says:

Oh dear Lord – my piggy ears! They aren’t bad but WOW umm no. Snorts with piggy laughter. You can always do like my dad did in Jury Duty – fall asleep. HA! Of course, he didn’t tell mom about that until years later. Smart man he was. XOXO – Bacon

    • I guess this modern music isn’t for everyone! If I would’ve had to go yesterday, I’d have probably fell asleep since that’s all I did yesterday…… ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

    • Ladybuggz says:

I agree with Bacon…. Oh Dear Lord!! My poor ears! I’ll stick with the original! Kind of reminds me a bit like Sade…..but she’s much better! 🙂 I guess I’m out of touch…..touch…touch…touch !

  5. It sounded way better than I thought it would. Hmmm, may have to check them out.

    • I haven’t listened to any of their other songs, or any of their other H&O covers for that matter. It’d be hard for them to match up to what they did to this song, though…

  6. ody N biskit; we never new thiz song hada ree make…knot bad ! N we hope dad can ezz cape juree dootee ~~~~~~~~~~ ugh ~~~~~ ☺☺♥♥

  7. franhunne4u says:

Maybe I disqualify forever now – but I kind of like this.

  8. Not bad really…..interesting….I always loved that song by H&O but this had me semi-rockin’ in my desk chair.

  9. Be thankful you’re only on call for a week. I got a summons today for US District Court starting mid-July. I’m on call for NINETY DAYS!!! Oh my God, I’m freaking out. I do NOT want to do it.

    • Dafuq!?!? That’s insane!!! How is a working person supposed to stay on call for three whole months like that? My manager would have a heart attack if I showed him that summons….

      • It’s the federal courts/federal government. They can do whatever they want, I guess. My coworker tells me he had to do a 90 day stint, too (before he came to work with us), and he called in for the three months but never was needed. I can hope for the same, but given my lack of luck, it seems unlikely.

She only comes out at night…I’m no maneater, I’m already in bed.

  11. Ohhhh she makes it all sound kind of nasty. I like it.

  12. I got called to jury duty year after year and ONE year, they actually put me on a jury. It was not a criminal thing and basically, everyone voted not guilty so we could go home to dinner. I hope they don’t do murder trials like that.

It’s okay for music dribbling away in the background I suppose. In fact, by the time I’d read through all the comments from people who’d actually read your post in timely fashion I’d already tuned it out…
