S Is For…

It’s time for your weekly lesson from the darker side of the alphabet as The Nest keeps calm and carries on with our Tuesday Photography A to Z challenge!  This episode should feature more S sounds than a pit in an Indiana Jones movie.  To make sure this challenge doesn’t suck, it’s time to make this thing legal with the official rules…

  • Only photos I took myself will be used.
  • All photos used will have been taken without any thought given to this challenge.

OK!  Now let’s see if I actually do know shit from shinola….

Shall we start off with some SKUNK SPRAY?  OK, the spray was a Photoshop effect… but the skunk is real.  What, you think Rainy doesn’t actually exist?  You try telling her that while I go stand a few yards away…

The SUN peeking out from behind a cloud while I went for an early morning walk a couple weeks ago.

My SHADOW, taken on that same walk.  Not as impressive as the shadow I should get to see in three weeks

The cat I named SEWER RAT….

And the cat I’ve come to know as SEWER RAT!  Boy have I got an interesting story to tell about this the first time I get a chance…

STAR WARS night at the ballpark!  You’ve got to be kidding me….

The late, great SPILLY doing Spilly type things while his brother Ody looks on in horror…

SIGNS, signs, everywhere a sign…

SUNRISE

SUNSET.  I don’t really have a great view of either, obviously…

halloween decorations

A couple SCARECROWS on the porch of a neighbor.

My sad, pathetic SUNFLOWER from the summer of 2010.

SPARKLEPONY and the SPONKIES.  Just some of the fucked up things my followers have sent me over the years…

A SCORCHING hot day SUMMER day in 2012.  What a fun season that was….

Biskit having a rare excitable time playing with some STRING.

A wild, vicious SEAL at the zoo!

The finely SCULPTED ass of the Willie Horton STATUE at Comerica Park in Detroit.

Former Tigers player and now analyst Craig Monroe showed up in my section dressed in a SHARP SUIT

And if you made it through this extra long post dedicated to one of the more popular letters and were wondering when the obvious would show up…. well, here you go!  A SQUIRREL in the SNOW!  He looks just as adorable as he probably is cold…

Come back in seven days for more photos that will fit the next letter to a T…

  1. ody N biskit…..dad doez noe shitz frum shinola; thiz S post iz awesum….N speekin oh shitz; whoa…..110 SUX !!!!! 🙂 ♥♥

  2. 110 is VERY HOT and I don’t CARE how dry it is. A branding iron is dry, too. The hottest it has ever been here in the Great North Way was 108 in New York one breathless 4th of July weekend. We tried to go to the beach, but so did every other person in the city and we never made it.

Your 110 made the Squirrel in the Snow look downright refreshing!

    • I think the highest temp my thermometer recorded that summer was 112, but I didn’t get a picture of that. Nor is my equipment or technique official in any way (I think the highest official temp we had that year was 108… but it was 100+ for about a month’s worth of days). The big plus was I had to get the lawn mower out just once between June and September… and it did feel better than our 100 and muggy we endured for most of mid July.

  3. Mr. Snowsquirrel looks chilled but at least he’s got a fur coat on…….I like your “S’s” (that sounds a bit weird). Which is my fave? The kitty pix…..(of course).

    “Simply squirrelicious,” said she.

So many of these to love. Can’t pick a favorite. I’m also waiting for the Solar Eclipse.

    • I have been waiting for over 30 years when I first heard it mentioned on TV. I’m in the unique location of just being just outside the path of two total eclipses in seven years. I’ll make do with my tiny sliver of sun on the 21st and in 2024…

Looks like Spilly wanted to dance but, in true cat style, couldn’t be bothered to stand up 🙂

  7. That’s a mighty svelte shadow you cast there! Just hope you don’t plan to show testicles in the snow from that squirrel next week, but I shan’t be overly surprised if you do. 😉 Have a great week!

  8. Of course, my vote is for that cute guy in the last photo.

  9. Trisha says:

This post has so many of my favorite things – sunflowers, sunrises and sunsets, cats and, of course, an adorable squirrel in the snow. And probably a few more things I’ve already forgotten because my short term memory has gone to shit.

I hope you get clear skies for the eclipse. I would love to see it but it’s going to pass too far south of here and I won’t be up for a another road trip for a good long while, not even for something as cool as an eclipse.

    • Ha! When I go to add the tags for these ABC posts, I forget half of the photos I use by the time I get to that part…

You should still get to see a good chunk of it, if there are clear skies. I’m in the 98-99% area, so I’m expecting something nice and dark. I got out my old video of the 1994 annular eclipse we had, and it’s kinda lame compared to what’s expected this time around. And what made me laugh was the news playing in the background and the eclipse going on at that very time only got a mention by the weatherman. This eclipse is almost getting more news coverage than the Chump Administration, and it’s still weeks away!

      • Trisha says:

All the hype makes me kind of nervous because, usually when they hype things, they tend to not happen and what sort of Armageddon type event would it take to stop the eclipse from happening? Maybe it will just be a dark, rainy day throughout its path. I hope not. I hope you get to see it!
