Sometimes You Feel Like A Nut…

I wish I had some cheese to go with this…

Squirrels love nuts, and we’ll assume that unlike some humans, they don’t suffer from legume allergies.

But like people, squirrels would prefer to have their nuts de-shelled.  Since they don’t have the required physiology to operate a nutcracker, that means they have to do this job with their strong and powerful teeth that can probably even bite into that fruitcake your Aunt Edna keeps sending you every Christmas….

And let’s not forget those pesky husks that just seem to get stuck in your teeth….

It’s always better naked.

Aw, look how happy he is now that his little treat is more edible!  This week’s Saturday Squirrel knows how to get to the good stuff…

Have a great weekend everyone!

    Extreme close-up!

  2. I make life easier for the squirrels around my house. I buy big bags of unshelled peanuts. They go nuts over them.

    • I’ve always liked the ones still in the shell better, so my squirrels have to make do with my leftovers. This was a park squirrel with a wild nut, and I didn’t notice he had removed the shell of the nut until I processed the photos later on….

    i think he’s mastered it

He does look a bit more bright-eyed in the photo where his nut is free of that pesky shell!

    • I was originally going to use just that photo because of how happy he seemed while he was eating until I noticed the photo before had the nut still shelled. In fact, until I saw that before picture, I thought he had somehow found a piece of corn at the park!

I put shelled nuts out regularly during the winter and also collect acorns from various friends – I can leave a heap out under the bird feeder and they will be gone in a few hours.

    • They love them. The only time I don’t see food disappear within a matter of hours is during the hot summer. I guess even squirrels don’t feel like eating in the heat….

  6. Tough little guys, aren’t they! Bet they could bite off a few other things, too.

I wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of his teeth…

  8. So cute. I like his little squirrel toes.

  9. Where there’s a will, there’s a way (and super sharp teeth!).
