Four years ago, when Jennifer Olivarez of Squirrel Picnic interviewed me for her post unveiling the amigurumi pattern she created based on Rainbow Donkey, I listed this as my favorite of the 70 or so comics I had done at the time. While there are a few others I’ve created since then that I like even better, this one still stands up as having one of the best sixth panel surprise twists in the series… an element that generally separates the good comics from the great ones.
Also of note, I experimented in this comic with making Buster (Who at the time rarely “starred” in any one comic and was largely just there for a one-off gag) a literal mute, who communicated only in vague symbols and images. It’s kinda cute in this comic, but I think I made the right choice in abandoning it after this one time…
This was Comic #34.
oh poor Buster… but there is hope, the BIG money always comes when the great spritits are gone… so once you will make millions, but you can’t waste it ;O)
The Sixth Panel definitely packed a punch (and some garbagebreath too!). Love it.

MBRS should speak for herself with regards to what’s on her breath…
So that’s how you get to the top, by doing sketchy things under the desk! Duly noted…
You can’t get to the top without starting at the bottom……..
My knees are bad, I may need a cushion…
Would you like a headrest as well?
Yes, please. If it isn’t too much trouble.
Did not see that coming…(no pun intended)…
Ha!
Ha, oh boy! I’m sure she just dropped a pen or something…
Right….. and I think she found it.
The old Police Academy gag again ..
LOL! I used that one with Mitzi as well…
That was no complaint, mind you, it was a wordplay on to gag …
I didn’t take it as a complaint, but I’m glad you clarified that the pun was intended!
I can only remember one job where I was there long enough to get a raise. Everywhere else, when it was time for a raise, it was also time for a new job. But at least in YOUR comics, raises are (theoretically) possible. It gives me hope, even if I will never get one. Sigh.
One thing I love about Mecca is that, in the time I’ve been there, raises have been reliable…. and a lot better than people would think. In 19 years, I’ve gotten 24 raises and nearly tripled my pay. Now if only I could have gotten hired a few years before I was born, I’d be able to retire now on the stock plan and profit sharing payouts that have made very long tenured Mecca employees millionaires (And which I will never see since the company has long since maxed out its potential growth)….
LMAO!! 🙂
Brilliant. I too didn’t spot that one on the horizon! (Note my careful use of words to steer away from bad puns!)
