Oftentimes when I visit the local park with the express purpose of adding to my already voluminous squirrel photo archive, I worry that… in over five years of taking thousands and thousands of pictures of these critters, that I have pretty much seen it all and the day’s mainly going to just be a waste of a good walk. And the first half hour I’m there, it’s almost always uneventful… and I generally have nothing but crappy out of focus pictures of scenery, or boring and redundant shots that aren’t worth the digital film they’re printed on. But invariably, every park trip always gets me something that makes me glad I chose that morning to come… something that I’ve never quite captured before that will be immediately queued into the next Saturday Squirrel feature. I continue to have interest in taking more squirrel photos because they continue to find an almost infinite number of ways to captivate and amaze me….
LOOK AT WHAT THE FUCK I SAW THURSDAY MORNING!!!!
Now given how much I have observed squirrels since I started this blog, I’m not going to quite say I’m an expert on their behavior…. but I’ve seen enough to generally know what they will and won’t do. And while I’ve gotten photos of squirrels briefly hanging upside down as they transit from branch to branch down a tree… I can absolutely say that I have NEVER EVER seen one dangle upside down from a horizontal branch by its rear claws before and just…… well, hang there!!!!
And this wasn’t happening a few feet off the ground where he (or possibly she depending on your interpretation of apparent scuirine genitalia) was in danger of becoming a pinata…. no, they were a good 50-75 feet in the air while performing this absolutely insane acrobatic stunt without a safety net to make up for a potential bad pedicure! And all the while, even enjoying a snack in the process!
The Nest would like to give a standing ovation to crazy Saturday Squirrels like this one who aren’t afraid to pull out all of the stops in an effort to get worldwide exposure on the shittiest squirrel blog on the internet! Our lawyers would also like us to remind you not to attempt any of the stunts you see in this post at home, as this squirrel is quite clearly a trained professional!
Have a great weekend everyone! And don’t let the blood all go to your head…
that can be also count squirrula… I better hang some garlic in my window ;O)
Garlic nuts! Count Squirrula approves…
Awk…that makes me dizzy just looking at that hanging upside down squirrel. Happy weekend.
Wouldn’t it be fun to hang upside down from a tree way up in the air, though? Wouldn’t it?
One word. Noooooo
That is so cool, man.
He’s a total badass.
Wow. That is just nuts.
Yes it is… which is why only a squirrel would try it.
My favorite, so far. Halloween is coming! Never too early to pick up a costume.
Batsquirrel would be a much more awesome costume than a stupid Minion or zombie…
How’s he doing that? How? How?
Extra sticky feet. And maybe some duct tape…
I think that’s a vampire squirrel. He WAS a squirrel, but he spent too much time with bats and now … VAMPIRE BAT SQUIRREL!
But he still comes out during the daytime without burning to a crisp. Probably can’t be killed…
All I can say is it’s a good thing that squirrel hadn’t had a recent pedicure because – well – he/she NEVER could have “grabbed hold” of that branch so well……I say BRAVO!
Pam
I wish my toenails were that strong… however I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t support my weight.
If they WERE that strong, they’d give new meaning to the saying “TOUGH AS NAILS” !
What a shot, he was eating his head down! Is it difficult to swallow in that position?
For a human it would be difficult, though the esophagus still makes sure food goes to the stomach even if that direction is up. Squirrels commonly hang upside down while they’re eating…. they just usually grasp on to the trunk of the tree rather than hang upside down in mid air like this one was doing!
Holy Squirrel Nuts! I’ve never seen anything like this! I’ve seen the squirrels hang upside down on the feeders and on the posts of the pergola but never like this, just out in space with nothing to grab on to and with their legs apart like that. Bat Squirrel is amazing! Wow, just when you think you’ve seen it all.
I had forgotten about your picture of the squirrel hanging upside down on the swing feeder when I posted this… but at least that wouldn’t have been a big drop had one of his tootsies slipped! Funny thing was with this… I was taking pictures of another squirrel in that tree, and just happened to pan over and saw….. THAT! I’d have missed it otherwise with how high up he was!
Might he be an Australian squirrel from Down Under?
Anyway, very cool. Never seem this behavior before either.
Oi! I’ve been told our Aussie friends don’t experience the joy of squirrels. I guess the koalas don’t like to share their eucalyptus trees…
