Happy Trails

squirrel

A squirrel can’t get squashed on a bike trail…. can it?

You may have heard me mention before about a bike trail near my house that I occasionally (but nowhere near often enough) take to when I need a little fresh air and a few calories burned.  I always bring along my older, smaller camera in case there’s anything worth taking a picture of.  Most of the time when I cover the mile long round trip, it’s just me and the occasional biker, jogger, or dog walker I’ll run into… though if I’m really lucky, it’s just me on the pavement.

Oh, and the critters.

Over the years, I’ve run into some fascinating beasts along this suburban safari.  OK, nothing too terribly exciting… but maybe, just maybe interesting enough for a Picture Day post….

squirrel

The same squirrel I led off this post with, only in a much cuter leaping pose.  This is a cul de sac that dead ends into the trail…

Another squirrel along the trail who was showing me what I could kiss…

I’ve run into all kinds of kitties on my walks…. like these three who have to have been from the same litter.

A snow white cat that crossed my path a few months ago.  Hey, shouldn’t that be good luck?

A gray tiger striped cat who did likewise.

Absolutely terrifying looking black cat that was wandering through the field that runs along the rural side of the trail!  I think this was the cat in Hall & Oates “Maneater” video…

I’m not brave enough to take any photos of the dogs being walked… but the ones who bark at me from across the fences on the urban side of the trail… yep.  Howl all you want, buddy… you’re on candid camera.

There’s no telling what four legged beastie I might come across the next time I go out for a walk.  Whatever it is, I’ll do my best to capture it for you…… assuming it doesn’t kill me first.

(Licking lips) I eagerly await your return to the jungle!

  1. you have cute neighbors… the squirrel in the first photo looks like a mini roo ;O)))

  2. Love your Hall & Oates ‘panther.’

Hopefully that white cat will indeed bring some good fortune your way. Gotta that leaping super squirrel shot. 😄

    • Catching a squirrel leap is all a matter of luck with my photography equipment, but I’ve gotten a few that blow that one away! Maybe I’ll dig some of them out for next Tuesday’s post….

Love the puma — but the rest of the cats look a little scrawny! And the dog — are you sure it’s a dog?

    • Very positive that was a dog since it was barking its fool head off at me the whole time I was taking that picture. Pretty sure it’s a big dog as well since I’d imagine that deck railing is at least 3 feet high…

  5. Bikes can do a pretty good job on cats, so assuming a squirrel would hold still long enough, I suppose it’s possible. But highly unlikely.

Love your wild life. Poor little black cat. They get such a bad rap.

    • And amazingly, they come in all personality shades as well. Spilly was a fun loving goofball. Biskit is about as docile as any cat I’ve ever seen. My sister’s black cat actually is sinister, but has a playful side in him I can bring out. The scowl on the face of that black cat in the picture is just absolutely menacing! I think it would make a good guard cat…

  6. Wonder if those kitties are part of a feral cat colony…..maybe….even Mr. Panther, Snow White and the tabby as well. The dog that has a BIG STICK I would stay away from for sure. At least you have your camera to document whatever bloody assault on your person that may result from you taking a walk down your supposedly peaceful bike trail !

    • There is a row of houses on the one side of the trail (The other side is a farmer’s field), so they could be pets or maybe pseudo-pets like the cats we cared for on our porch when we were kids. Those cat pictures span about 5 years, so there’s different cats I see at different times. The three brothers picture is amazing because I don’t even remember taking it, and dumped it in a folder in my Photobucket account that I’d completely forgotten about until I started doing weekly photo posts a couple years ago. That was quite a find because seeing three identical looking cats in the same picture is very unusual!

  7. Yay for cute creatures when you go for a walk. If you don’t post for a while, I guess we’ll know what happened to you and where to tell the police to look for your dead, rotting corpse… 😉

    • It’s funny, because the main reason I pack my ancient phone in one of my pockets is in case I come across any deranged animals along the way (I was confronted by a vicious dog in my younger days). And it wouldn’t even do much good since by the time I turned it on, I’d probably be reduced to a bloody stump…

Nice to know that you’re not alone as you wander your path. Cute critters. Oh the stories they could tell.

That picture with the three cats staring at you is kinda creepy. It’s like the setting for the sadly never made sequel “Hitchcock’s The Cats”.

  10. I am overwhelmed with feelings of cuteness. Joy.

  11. Ladybuggz says:

I can’t believe the number of squirrels you have in your neighborhood!

  12. Whew, I’m glad you survived your close encounter with death. You never know what those cute, fluffy little kitties might do!

That dog looks a lot like a goat…
