Yeah, you better save the receipt on this one…
Many people associate the “New Wave” genre of music with the British bands that found success in the old colonies during the early 80’s. That era gave us some of the 80’s biggest names like A Flock of Seagulls, Duran Duran, Human League, and Wham! The star power of New Wave’s first wave made the second wave that arrived in the latter half of the decade pale by comparison… and as such, it’s largely ignored in any fond recollections of the decade. If you search deep enough through the history of mid to late 80’s pop, you’ll find a plethora of minor one hit wonders from the Old Country that have mostly been forgotten about because they were never really that big to begin with…

Not everyone an be as big as the Big Damn Band.
That second wave produced no stars, with the ironic exception of The Escape Club who got zero attention from their fellow countrymen. But it left behind a bunch of great tunes that are probably still floating around the edges of your 80’s memory banks even if you hadn’t thought of them in decades. One such second wave OHW was a Scottish outfit called Hipsway, who were part of a blue eyed funky soul trend in British music at the time. See if you don’t remember, and maybe even like, this earworm of theirs that made it up to #19 back in 1986… “The Honeythief.”
The lyrics are stupid and garbled, but the song is extremely catchy and fun! And that bass from the keyboards that punctuates points of the song is almost refreshing to hear from a hit that was smack in the middle of the synth pop fad. And no, we don’t know who put the ants in singer Grahame Skinner’s pants… but that man just can’t stop dancing…. or shuffling… or whatever the hell he’s doing throughout most of the video that’s a weird mix of the band playing in what could very well be an empty pool mixed in with random stock footage from someone’s vault…
I’ll be back next Monday with more sugar that will satisfy…
oh the hairstyles!!!! made with beer and shaving foam… if you loved our planet… or with tons of aquanet if you hated our slice earth… thanks for digging out a long forgotten part of muzak!
I didn’t know beer was a substitute for styling gel. That must be some of the strong stuff!
Uhm – sounds like every other British band from that age – not very remarkable … no wonder they never made it here in Germany.
Well, not everyone can sound like the Scorpions…
I am very glad not everyone does – that would be boring … they could also sound like Fury in the Slaughterhouse *just an inhousejoke for Hannoverians*
Catchy tune but you’re right about the garbled lyrics (huh? What’d he say?) and I guess when whoever directed this said “MOVE GRAHAME!” he wasn’t sure what to do so just kind of wiggled/jerked/STARED his way through the song. Not a lot spend on the set though – empty pool? Probably…….maybe they should have filled it – might have made for a more interesting video????
Pam
That could have been a claim to fame…. being the only band to perform underwater. Only it probably would’ve been hard for Grahame to bust a move in the deep end…
That would have been a blessing actually……he left a lot to be desired in the “creative dancing” department!
You and your damned misleading headlines! You knew I was going to have Boogie Oogie Oogie going through my head all day, didn’t you?
What you didn’t know is that it’s involved in a mashup with Herb Alpert. My mind is a very scary place…..
Blame Mecca… I probably wouldn’t have even thought of that title had BOO not become the latest almost every night earworm.
And so we go from honey to other delights….
I thought I would listen. Just to see. How bad could it be? Very, very bad. I turned off the Common album I was listening to for this? Waaaaaay too 80s. I made it about half-way to see if maybe it got any better. No, it did not. I have Wednesday to make up for it maybe.
LOL! Yes, this is not a song for the 80’s faint of heart. Wednesday will be another big time classic rock staple… I have to think this one will fetch more supporters than Free Bird did, though…
Almost anything is better than Freebird. lol
I love Pooh, but I guess it was downhill from there. I think it’s because we’re watching (why are we DOING this?) the news. It’s so depressing, I can’t think of anything else.
“The lyrics are stupid and garbled, but the song is extremely catchy and fun!”
Best blog line of 2017
LOL. That would also describe a lot of pop hits…
Nope, never heard it. Still…it is a ‘catchy tune’ and some impressive footwork in the video.
All that dancing for a song few people remember. I hope it was at least good exercise…
😆
Very typically 80s, nothing special but nothing wrong with it either. Your video upload is” not available in (my) country”, but Alexa came through for me. It’s hard to believe that when we were growing up there WAS NO ALEXA…
The simple days of stone tools, dinosaurs and dial up…
