Is there a New Years Eve tradition better known across America than the famous ball drop in Times Square? What if that big ball were edible, and what if it looked enough like a nut that a giant squirrel might come along and decide to nibble on it? Or maybe chomp the hell out of it? Would midnight be the same without that big ball touching down and lighting up the marquee with “2018,” a four digit number that would have seemed so weird to us as an actual year when we were kids? Does Tiffany have insurance on this American icon should it end up looking like an apple core before the crowd starts singing Auld Lang Syne?
I dunno. I just needed a story to accompany this photo of a squirrel chowing down on a large walnut. The last Saturday Squirrel of 2017…
Have a great weekend, and a Happy New Year everyone!
HA! Check out this blog post from my friends at “Down Home In NC” blog…….in their town a giant 1,250 lb. acorn is the center of their New Year’s Eve celebration….it recently had to be moved to Duke University to a more “stable” spot !! http://downhomeinnc.blogspot.com/2017/12/thoroughly-poetic-pictorial-thursday_28.html
Here’s hoping that big ball in Times Square with all those crystals doesn’t have a malfunction tomorrow night – wouldn’t bode well for 2018 !!
Pam
That is a YUGE acorn! Big enough to satisfy a whole party of squirrels! Who cares if there’s nothing left by midnight…. and they can always find a bigger one next year, right?
I am watching Scrat right now and thinking of you!
Some people wouldn’t take that as a compliment! 😉
What’s all that you’re going on about somebody’s balls dropping? Anyhew, cute squirrel!
it is inevitable that all balls will eventually drop…
Happy New Year ball-sack!
I’ll bet Father Time’s scrotum has probably dropped pretty far by now…
Happy weekend, Happy New Year. May loads of smiles and furry adventures be your constant companion in 2018.
Thank you, and Happy New Year to you as well!
Goodbye 2017, don’t let the door hit you on the way out… Well, it’s nearly goodbye, anyway!
Here’s to seeing all the 2018 Saturday Squirrels!
I hope they are just as cute and interesting as the ones I captured this year….
It is so cold in New York, they are having technical problems with The Big Ball. They might be better off with a giant walnut. Happy New Year!
I’m sure they could find a giant snowball somewhere that would be just as pretty and ooooh-worthy. I admit, though, I would greatly enjoy seeing the Big Ball malfunction somehow and screwing with the tradition…
Nut’s! Here’s to a better Year ahead, 2017 was so crappy! Have a Great One, hoping you don’t drop Your balls! 🙂
If I ever dropped my balls, the cats would quickly have them hidden under the couch and I’d have to do without!
Wishing you many nuts and treats for the new year and also world conquest.
Thank you. When is the Year of the Squirrel, anyway?
Big balls are overrated …
