Go To Hell

Don’t forget to pack your long underwear…

Are you ready for another wonderful, glorious, super duper Monday?  Who am I kidding, of course you are!  You know the start of the week is a time to look forward to, because that’s when The Nest digs up another fossilized piece of vinyl that died well before its time out of that pop music tar pit we like to call the Dusty Vinyl Archive!  DJ Scratchy’s got a shovel, and wants you to dig this awesome old tune she found buried in the crawlspace… while the Sponkies are reconstructing the record’s bones using super glue and duct tape.  This old dinosaur will give your ear over 40 smiles to the gallon…

Back in the 70’s and 80’s, long before Justin Bieber ruined the musical reputation of our neighbors to the north forever, Canadian bands were making some awesome fucking rock and roll.  Some of these Canuck musicians hit it big in The States, some were able to at least make a dent in the US market, and many were flat out ignored by most of us tone deaf Yanks.  The band Trooper clearly falls into that much maligned final category…

They look like a cross-section of white male fashion in the 70’s.

Trooper was, and may very likely still be, well known in Canada… but not so much outside of the provinces.  Their lone US Billboard hit only made it up to #59 in 1978, and probably doesn’t show up in the lineup of your classic rock station much, if at all.  Luckily, I live in a radio market that embraced a lot of lesser known hits from back in the day, so this is one I’ve heard a time or twenty.  Here’s Trooper’s shoulda-been-bigger hit, “Raise A Little Hell”…

You can just tell by the looks of these guys, they know how to raise a little hell.  This song won’t blow the speakers out in your car, or maybe even annoy that old lady next door who thinks rock and roll in the devil’s music…. but it’s still a good one to get you riled up and ready to kick a little ass.  Rock on, Canada!

Sex, drugs, and Celine Dion…

I’ll return next Monday with another song that got buried under the permafrost…

  1. another evidence that the charts are not only just for the music… I like Trooper and I also like their general hand grenade although it is a little lame ;o)

  2. Hmm…I can’t decide on this selection. The lyrics are simple and repetitive which normally makes for a plausible hit. Maybe it just needs a few more beers to get the feet shuffling and the head a-bobbing.

  3. Hmm.. a song I don’t know. I like it though! ❤

I feel like raising a little hell right now. I know, I’ll throw dog turds at people who suck.
I like it. Good message, too.

Perfect song for today! I feel like raising some hell too. If I end up starting a riot today, I will list our ignoring of Canada as one of my complaints. I live a mere two hours from Vancouver, BC and never hear a thing about what’s going on up there. Our self-centered-ness as a country is rather embarrassing!

  6. ody N biskit !!!! we haz knot hurd this toon ina long time !!! ♫♪♫♫♫♪♫

  7. I have vague recollections of this one…..didn’t get much air play though where I was at the time – there was SO MUCH music back then that things often got lost in the noise. This for me anyway was probably in that category as I was too busy raising a little hell.

Don’t you think that Celine sounds like she sings with a hamster in her mouth?

  9. Thom says:

Yes! This got played on our Rochester NY station fairly often, and as Music Director of our college station at the time, I had this in heavy rotation (we also got 2 copies of the record from the record company, MCA if I recall correctly), so one wound up in my collection…a perk of being the music czar….

Trooper is Awesome!! Always love them and always will! We’re here for a good time, not a long time…Now, Celine, oh boy, not many Canadians like her, including myself…Can’t stand her is truthful!

  11. I remember that song!!! I was 19 when it was out. Yay!!

  12. I’ve never heard that song – ever. Sure I won’t hear it again. But on another note… notice how so many bands have “the guy with the hat.”

  13. draliman says:

Not bad, not bad. I don’t think they look like hell-raisers. They look a bit goofy, like “party on, dude”.
