Still reeling because you couldn’t even win a parting gift in the Contest of Whatever? Well, we’re very sorry…. but cheer up! Today is Monday, and that means it’s time for The Nest to poison you with some more ear candy from our sponsors! Yes, let’s reach into that grab bag full of Lee Press On Nails and pull out another lost song that the radio zonked from that tub full of Turtle Wax we like to call the Dusty Vinyl Archive! DJ Scratchy is inviting you to come on down and try to name this tune in less than 69 notes, while the Sponkies have decided to take the physical challenge. Smile, you’re leaving with a copy of the DVA home game…
1983 is one of those glory years in pop music history for me, though probably not for the same reasons you may (or may not) care about the songs of that year. You see, the radio station my parents listened to at the time wasn’t really a Top 40 station… it seemed to despise pop, and largely resisted the urge to play it. At least until Eddie Van Halen gave them an excuse to throw a very popular Michael Jackson song into their playlist…
That station was mainly made up of Top 40 rock songs, as well as a very eclectic collection of much more obscure rock from the day that would make the hearts of corporate radio bosses these days go off the air if they realized nobodies were getting airplay. I shared one of those lost memories of listening to KWK in 1983 before, and here’s another one from the same summer… Danny Spanos’ version of “Hot Cherie.”
Danny Spanos had a brief moment of 80’s fame when he released his 1983 EP Passion in the Dark, of which this song was a single from. “Hot Cherie” ironically never saw the Hot 100, but it did make it to #15 on the Mainstream Rock chart, so it wasn’t ignored entirely. It also got covered by the forgettable 90’s rock band Hardline in 1992… whose shitty version I couldn’t even listen to all the way through, although it is probably the best known rendition of this song. God, the 90’s sucked…
I will admit that, in checking it out again, the Spanos song isn’t quite as great as I remembered it… but it still beats the hell out of that other Sherrie song that came out a year later.
I’ll be back in about 167 hours (thanks DST) with some more good stuff from my past…
oh I liked it… but it feels as if I’m outgrown somehow now…. but it was good muzak between all that sýnthesizer howlings of the 80’s…
It was a bit different than the stuff that really was big in 1983, but I was sad to find out later it was no hit and nobody plays it anymore…
Again great beat but I’ve never heard of it. Snorts and rolls with piggy laughter. I think I’ll go put my head back in the sand now. XOXO – Bacon
You’ll have a lot of company in that sand since this one actually is pretty obscure. Just be careful that sand isn’t actually a litter box!
Great tip my evil friend. Thanks!! XOXO – Bacon
No his love wasn’t strong enough…
Obviously not. Nor, apparently, was his record deal…
Oh no, not a Steve Perry diss!! Who peed in your Cheerios this morning? Have to admit today’s entry isn’t my favorite from the 80’s but I did some serious toe tapping.
LOL! You haven’t seen anything yet! I remember liking it more as an 8 year old listening to it on the radio all the time than listening to it for the first time in 35 years now… so this may be one that would have to grow on you a bit.
Journey was always a fav of mine. Many happy memories associated with the band and their music. 🎶 Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah…nah, nah, nah, nah, nah…nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah…nah, nah, nah, nah. 🎶
I have another follower who is a HUGE Journey fan. I do hope the both of you don’t keeeel me in a few weeks….
I’ll be turning up the volume then! 💽
ody N biskit; will hafta give thiz one a listenz; we canna rememburr thiz song…. !! 🙂 ♥
It wasn’t any big hit, so you’d have had to have been listening to the right stations at the time to have heard it before.
I liked that, except for the saxophone solo. I’m currently not loving brass or wind instruments in my rock. Not surprisingly, I don’t remember the song or the name Danny Spanos. I was 13 in 1983 and still mostly at the mercy of my parent’s music choices. Based on the songs I remember hearing as a kid, I can’t figure out what kind of station they listened to!
I just hope it wasn’t a banjo music station! I don’t have many banjo songs in my Dusty Vinyl Archive (Though I do have one coming up soon in the countdown)…
Hm, a song with banjos? I’ll be curious to see if it’s one I know, or even one of the banjo songs in my playlist. There are two I listen to quite frequently….
It’s probably not on your playlist, as it’s one of the newest songs in the countdown. But its perfectly justified as I end up hearing it about 3 or 4 times a week on the radio in the car despite the fact that I don’t drive a whole lot!
Kurt is gonna start haunting your ass while your taking a shit, I asked him for a favor.
Well, Kurt is just gonna have to man up, because I’m far from through with him. I will say that I love that kinda sarcastically stoned look on his face in that picture, though… which is why I reuse it for snarky I Hate the 90’s captions a lot…
He’s who I got my sarcastically stoned look from…don’t be hatin’.
It looks much better on you than it does on him…
Why thank you…
Hey, I remember this song! Hard to believe it didn’t chart, although I think in the 80s I was listening to album cut radio so I must have heard it there…
Meanwhile, dammit! As soon as you dissed Perry’s Sherri I was ready to make a you shoulda been gone joke and then you beat me to the punch in your caption. Not fair…..
I thought there might be a chance you knew this one since I remember you were the only one to identify “Go For A Soda” when I used it in LSWE, and that’s another obscure regional non-hit from that same time.
I apologize for stealing you joke, knowing how I made you feel….
That song was pretty damn bad. I made it through to the middle but my ears started bursting into flames. Waaay to 80s.
And that SP cannot sing. He screeches. But compared to anyone else he’s just the worst. Sorry SP and his band fans, I never want to hear him!
Ha! I have actually come to enjoy how you tear down the songs I like! I can never, ever accuse you of trying to suck up to me as I think others do in these posts, because you quite obviously call them like you see them (Or hear them, I guess!)
And it’s always good to have someone else who hates Perry and Journey…
We are kindred spirits on that. I was thinking. I know crazy, huh?
The 80s for me is what the 90s must be. I swear I don’t remember any songs they did in the 80s.
Yes? My husband loves them. He plays their music when I am not home.
I don’t know this one. I thought you meant that AWFUL Steve Perry one. God, I hate that song!
Oh no…. that Perry came a year later, and I always thought it was weird there were two Cherie/Sherrie songs. Little did I know at the time that the Cherie song I knew wasn’t getting played everywhere…
Can’t even say I’ve heard this song, I listened and couldn’t even get all the way through it, it sucked! Sorry ES !
There is no need to apologize to me just because you can’t appreciate really good 80’s music! 😛
I’m sticking my tongue out back atcha! lol
Hmm. One of very many exactly the same songs from that period. And what’s with the video? He just sat there un-moving the whole time. Come on Spanos, put some enthusiasm into it.
