Ten Years After

The artwork has gone straight to hell, folks…

Today is a very special milestone in my online life (or lack thereof), as it was ten years ago that my blog’s flagship character Evil Squirrel came to be.  April 25, 2008 was actually the day the personality was created… I had drawn the grey squirrel that would become ES before, and it would be a few weeks before I blended the two together into the critter those of you who have followed my blog for some time know… but I’ve always considered April 25th to be ES’s “birthday.”  For the occasion I tried, for the first time since I got this new computer in October, to draw…. well, anything.  You can see my artwork is not only a bit rusty, but the “new and improved” version of MS Paint sucks nasty possum balls.  The old Paint NEVER left uncolored pixels around the lines like that.  This is just more proof that change is a bad thing…

Unless today’s title put this earworm in your head.

Evil Squirrel and the assorted characters he and my online friends helped inspire are the reason I have this blog in the first place.  I came to WordPress in 2011 because Cafepress (No relation) thought I should promote my online store of Evil Squirrel merchandise, and I’m deathly allergic to Facebook.  That didn’t quite work out… but I have almost six and a half years of unique, off the wall, and hopefully funny material here that may or may not have made the world a somewhat better place…

Or at least a more fucked up place.

In honor of this ignominous anniversary, and because my most recent Wednesday feature ran its course last week, I’m going to give you all the chance to help create next Wednesday’s post.  You may remember I did a Prompt the Squirrel feature in 2015 and 2016… and tried to do it again last year, only to fail miserably and scrap it.  Well, to help make up for that misstep, I’m going to do a mini version where I’m going to allow you all to ask me something…. anything you want.

Because. OK, that was your one question…

Everyone reading this post is entitled to ask ONE (1) question in the comments below.  It can be about anything, I don’t care.  I just can’t promise you that you’ll get the answer you want (I am a smartass, after all), but you WILL get an answer.  I’ll compile all of the questions as well as my (cough, hack) well thought out responses in next Wednesday’s post.  You’ll obviously need to have your question posted in the comments of this post before next Tuesday night.  You only get one shot at obtaining the knowledge of the ancients, so don’t blow it!

No, you can’t ask for Mitzi’s phone number.

Hmm…..that last photo in your post of Frank Gorshin as the Riddler – Obviously he just completed some sort of “dreaded exam” on someone with that finger of his and I want to know is that a sterile glove he’s wearing? Gotta be careful these days you know.

Firstly, I am glad that we became friends via WordPress. ❤
    Secondly, congrats on your milestone!
And thirdly…my question for you…um…can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street?
Kidding…seriously, what's the one word would you use to best describe yourself? (Besides smartass.)

  7. Why Evil Squirrel? Why is the squirrel evil?

  8. No, seriously … why EVIL squirrel? I love the name, mind you … but squirrels are so NOT evil. Was it the natural contrariness of the name? Inquiring minds need to know.

Squirrel eat baby birds, do you want to rethink your statement of “squirrels are not evil”? Here is Wikipedia’s entry about squirrel behaviour concerning food:
“However, some squirrels also consume meat, especially when faced with hunger.[8] Squirrels have been known to eat insects, eggs, small birds, young snakes, and smaller rodents. Indeed, some tropical species have shifted almost entirely to a diet of insects.
Predatory behavior has been noted by various species of ground squirrels, in particular the thirteen-lined ground squirrel. For example, Bailey, a scientist in the 1920s, observed a thirteen-lined ground squirrel preying upon a young chicken. Wistrand reported seeing this same species eating a freshly killed snake.[ Whitaker examined the stomachs of 139 thirteen-lined ground squirrels and found bird flesh in four of the specimens and the remains of a short-tailed shrew in one; Bradley, examining white-tailed antelope squirrels’ stomachs, found at least 10% of his 609 specimens’ stomachs contained some type of vertebrate, mostly lizards and rodents. Morgart observed a white-tailed antelope squirrel capturing and eating a silky pocket mouse.”

    • Interesting question that will require some backstory, with a subtext that a lot of people would disagree with you on. I shall do my best to tackle it (though I see one of my readers seems to be taking it on as well)….

Can you make a weekly cat-feature on Wednesdays?

    Happy birthday to Evil Squirrel!
I recently lost old faithful Paint Shop Pro 8 from ye olden days. I think it hailed from Windows 98 days even. A Windows 10 update killed it. I bought Photoshop Elements to replace it, and, oh boy, it’s so much better it’s unbelievable.

My question – you seem to like (o)possums quite a lot. You have posted that picture of those hideous babies several times. So why did you choose Buster, your possum character, to keep dying horribly? I’m not complaining, it’s funny, just asking…

    • Photoshop is great for adding all kinds of cool things to drawings (or SCT scenes), but 2000’s era Paint was second to none for just plain line drawing. I don’t get how the Fill tool not working like it’s supposed to is any kind of an improvement…

Possum squishing questions are the best kind of questions! I’ll kick that one around next week…

Congratulations on the ES anniversay! I have a question.

How do you feel about the Menendez brothers (killed their parents) being moved to the same prison & same, uh, block (not sure that’s correct word, but you know what I mean)? I am against it. Bad boys, bad boys.

    • Thank you! I don’t think I’d heard about the Menendez Brothers since their trial back in the 90’s, so I’ll have to look into what’s going on now. But I’ll make sure to weigh in on it somehow…

  12. What exactly do you mean when you describe cute and what is the attraction to cute? Asking for a friend.

  13. On another note… Congratulations on ten years of Evil Squirrel’s Nest. Good job. Great blog. Thank you for the fun.

  14. Piglove says:

Conpigulations my evil friend…. questions…questions…let me ponder. Okay here you go.

You’re in a store and you are buying only four items. These four items have to be something that would make the cashier remember you from all of her other customers for the day. What are the four items?
    XOXO – Bacon

    • LOL! This may be fun, or it may drive me up the wall. We’ll see what I come up with…

      • Piglove says:

Snorts with piggy laughter… well you asked. It could definitely be interesting. I think when you pick said items, you need to buy them where you work and video tape the cashier. Yep, I think you need to do that. XOXO – Bacon

  15. Quirky Girl says:

Happy Evil Squirrel-versary! How funny it is to realize that The Squirrel and I share a birthday! 😆

    • You should be honored to share a birthday with such a famous squirrel! Well, OK, famous to about 20 or so people! So, do you have a question for next week’s Swami post?

      • Quirky Girl says:

Oh, you have no idea how incredibly honored I am. 😛 😛 😛

I do indeed have a question. This question is for Mitzi:

Mitzi, if you could, like, choose any profession besides, like, being the village harlot and stuff, what would you, um, do? And would, like, any of your current fellow creatures, you know, be your cohorts in your new, uh, adventure?

Oops. Sorry. I wanted to word it in a way where poor Mitzi might understand without needing too much assistance. Let me try this again:

Mitzi, if you could choose any profession besides being the village harlot, what would you do? And would any of your current fellow creatures be your cohorts in your new adventure?

  16. Ladybuggz says:

Happy Birthday to ES! and many more I hope! OK, this question took me at least 2 cups of coffee, Are there any movies that have actually brought you to tears and I mean sad or happy tears not just because it was a shitty movie tears?

  17. Many happy returns to ES!

My question is: After having watched your countdown and expecting this song to pop up, what is your opinion of it?

    Will you marry me?

    😛

Ok, I will try to think of a legit question later. Try, being the key word there.

  20. ghostmmnc says:

Happy birthday to ES! 🙂 my question to you… In a lot of your posts you mention Mecca as where you are employed. I’ve never heard of it before, so…what is it, and what do you do there?

  21. Ally Bean says:

If you didn’t write about squirrels here, what would your blog be about?

  22. JackieP says:

I’m still around, in case you missed me. LOL I hang out with Mer quite a bit. I’m trying to stay out of trouble. Anyway, I missed this one last week somehow. Now I have to think of a question that hasn’t been asked…..thinking…..thinking….thinking……

Thunk! Oops, that was my head hitting my desk…sorry….ok….here we go……

When did you discover your admiration of the bushy-tailed critters? And why? Also, do the cats ever get jealous?

You probably answered this question before at some point but I’m old and forget things……Thunk!

    • I do see you still around on Merby’s blog! And I’m glad she’s got people who can always come up with the right words of support that often fail me. If I have answered that question before, well, it will get answered again shortly!

  23. Trisha says:

Happy belated birthday to Evil Squirrel! I was going to ask you what your favorite critter was when you were a kid but now I’m thinking I already asked that in Prompt the Squirrel. Or, was that favorite pet? Dammit, I can’t remember. How about this: Were there any critters, real or cartoon, that you were crazy about as a kid?
