You’re probably familiar with the “classic squirrel pose.” The critter is standing, slightly hunched forward with a curved back, eating something tasty it found laying on the ground. It’s the image that most often comes to mind when we think of squirrels, and I’ve got hundreds of photos of that exact look in my archives. I noticed this squirrel seems to take to take the hunching over part a bit to the extreme, though. The upper part of his spine is literally parallel to the ground, forcing it to support all the weight of his upper half by itself! That is a position that it would be extremely uncomfortable for a person to be in… let alone try to eat something like that. The common squirrel often laughs off silly things like the laws of physics and biomechanics. He’s happy as can be enjoying that nut while bent over like an upside down L. Hopefully this week’s poorly postured Saturday Squirrel won’t lose his balance and plant nose first on his silly head…
Have a great weekend everyone!
Never thought about how squirrels hunch and eat at the same time. Endlessly fascinating is your trove of squirrel facts.
If my blog serves only one purpose, I hope that it makes people notice what fascinating creatures squirrels are. I never used to pay attention to them myself, and can’t believe all I used to miss out on…
Haha, squirrels do seem to laugh off the laws of physics quite regularly, don’t they? It’s a miracle that predators ever manage to catch them.
Well, sometimes the squirrels outsmart themselves. You know who else used to cheat the laws of physics…… Wile E. Coyote. Enough said…
Haha! #logic
I had no idea squirrels like biomechanics jokes. He is a cutie.
When I think of squirrels — and since I met you, I think of them far more often than I used to — I think of them up on the poles happily gnawing away at my cable. There are eight million acorns in my yard. Why do they have to eat the cables?
I hope he doesn’t get indigestion from his eating position.
He looks perfectly happy hunched up having his snack…….Quasimoto Squirrel has learned to live with his hunch I guess……………. Have always been a HUGE fan of squirrels – they are hilarious to watch – VERY CLEVER they are!

It seems like hunching over that far could give even a flexible little squirrel back a backache after awhile!
We have squirrels in our attic. They really like it up there, always having their squirrel parties. I bet we have some hunchbacks in there, it would only make sense. The best hangout for squirrels here is the local university. They are so used to a steady diet of pizza, they will stand right on your foot. No fear!
Squirrels definitely defy the laws of nature at times. Especially when they’re imitating a Slinky!
