The cat, the myth, the legend. This is the original Sewer Rat… the feline who three years ago scared my Mom half to death when it pounced out of the sewer drain in front of my house. Not to be confused with the more well-known Sewie, his much furrier doppelganger that replaced The Rat when his family moved away in early 2017. This and another photo I got of him a few moments later are the only two pictures I ever got of this particular cat whose path crossed mine in a most interesting way… and I love how in this one Sewer Rat is confidently strutting with a purpose. He’s lean, mean, badass, and awfully damned cute. And how can you not love that big, fluffy Maine coon cat tail? I was never able to get this cat to come to my door, but The Nest will always have a place in our hearts for THE Sewer Rat…
He definitely seems to show off a street Sewer Rat swagger (I dare you to say that fast 3 times).
No thanks! I’d rather keep my tongue in one, straight piece…
He is beautiful. It doesn’t hurt that he looks a lot like my cat Harrison. I’m glad you were able to get a couple snaps for posterity.
I wish I could’ve gotten some more close up shots. I’d have loved to pet his tail…
He was a most handsome specimen indeed – The original Sewie popping out of the sewer drain must have been quite a shock for your Mom! Too bad he moved away but you know, Sewie, Jr. (haha) is a cutie too. AND he’s happy to have a handout at Chez Squirrel’s Nest so you get to know him better. That’s a win/win.

Sewie is either jealous of the treatment I’m giving Gypsy, has been banned from my porch by her, or is being kept inside at his home more often… because I haven’t seen him in my yard since I got the pictures of him rolling over about a month ago. I miss his cute little face. The Original had a cute face too, but the tail was his best feature…
Let’s just hope Sewie is OK……is Gypsy any more friendly since her initial “drive by” for food?
Gypsy continues to be friendly to me (as long as I don’t try to cradle her or pet her too much), but she still hates my cats. She won’t wander in on her own (even if it’s raining), and she’ll start hissing if I try to bring her inside. I’ve found out she’s a tree climbing cat, and just missed the chance to get a picture of her in my tree a few days ago. A cat in a tree is not something I have in my archive yet!
He’s definitely strutting along like he owns the place.
He may very well own the place. Though I’m not going to sniff around for any territory markers…
A cat with a purpose.
It might be funnier to see a cat with a porpoise…
That is one big, fluffy tail! And he does look like he has a mission on his mind and doesn’t have time for any distractions or detours.
As long as his target isn’t one of my squirrels, I hope his mission is a success. As for distractions and detours, I think he carefully avoided those treacherous rocks and puddles in his path!
We’ve got a big bad ass Feral Tom in our neighborhood and he’s ugly! He’d be a nice looking cat if he was shaved and his hair taken care of, long grey coat, matted and scruffy with a temper to match. He’s put a few cats in the hospital and the SPCA will only lend a trap to you and then leaves it up to you if you want to just have him fixed or put down, I can’t bring myself to do either!
Getting your balls cut off would have to be even worse than death, so Tom thanks you for your conscience!
