Congratulations! You just made it exactly halfway through 2018! It’s all downhill from here until we get to the next year that will go by even faster than this one did. Whoa. Let’s slow the roll of time for just a little bit and take some time to enjoy the music… good, irreverent, fucked up music like that we’re featuring every Monday in The Nest’s Top 30 Novelty Songs of All Time countdown! DJ Scratchy continues our journey in her musical time machine, and after visiting the 80’s, 70’s and (gasp!) 40’s… this week we’re going to relive the 1990’s! Please do not mock any of the people you see carrying giant brick cellphones…
#27. “New Age Girl” – Deadeye Dick
Deadeye Dick, not to be confused with fellow penis joke One Eyed Willy, was a band that formed in New Orleans during the early days of the 90’s alternative rock movement. They had a silly, but rockin’ little song that achieved some level of exposure on Southern radio stations that got a big break when it was used on the soundtrack for the seminal 90’s film Dumb And Dumber. Thanks to the power of stupid people, Deadeye Dick’s magnum opus officially was able to become a one hit wonder as it was now getting national airplay. It’s time for us to meet the mysterious and totally hip Mary Moon…
Though this was probably not intended to be a novelty song, it certainly plays out that way with its crazy lyrics, funky delivery and goofy imagery. How many songs to you know that manage to rhyme “vegetarian” with “septuagenarians?” And of course the punch line of the chorus that is the one thing anyone who is familiar with this song will always remember… “She don’t eat meat, but she sure likes the bone.” Classic. And this song will always remind me of this hilarious 1994 commercial for HBO that is one of my favorites…
Ahhh, the days when you could make fun of idiots from all walks of life. And with that lineup of dumb and dumber folks, this post has now come full circle…
I’ll have another ethically sourced novelty song for you next Monday as the countdown continues…
You sure got that every year goes faster than the last thing right, Bill. Yeesh.
It’s the proverbial roll of toilet paper winding down… and one of these years, there isn’t going to be another roll left in the cabinet!
I might have heard the name of this band before. Maybe. I never saw Dumb & Dumber (it looked dumb) so didn’t hear this song there or anywhere. The lyrics are, um, pretty ridiculous. I must have listened to music in the 90s, but this wasn’t it.
I am going to add to the novelty list though. You just can’t have too many!
I had no idea it was from Dumb and Dumber until I looked up the background on this song (I never watched it either). I remember it making the rounds on the radio back in the day… but it doesn’t seem like it stuck around, which is weird since there were a lot of goofy songs that came to define the 90’s.
I live a sheltered life of a pig. I’ve never heard of this one… thank Gawd! Snorts and rolls with piggy laughter. XOXO – Bacon
And this was supposed to be really big in the South! So much for that!
ody N biskit…..we keepin R record heer with nother we due knot rememburr; ore may bee de FSG just gettin two anchient !!!!!! ☺☺♥♥
I think we’ll change that record next Monday…
However awful the world may seem, remember that hard times force the larger world to change. The world wars created modern Europe and today’s misery will probably be tomorrow’s better days. WE may not be around to see it, but good time create complacency. Hard time force change. Dumb today, smarter tomorrow? It’s a thought.
Oh goodness, I’ve known girls like the ones in the HBO bit, bless their hearts.
But hey, I haven’t heard “New Age Girl” in, like, ages. You have to love all of this silly stuff. Everybody jump up and dance!
Whew! I think you’re the only one who even does remember this one so far! I love silly, new age, and even empty headed girls. The 90’s were pretty fun…
Not a fan, it sounded a bit tuneless to me. It seems that these “fringe” videos are not protected by the same copyright as they all seem to play!
Imagine that… at least they let you listen to our awful stuff! I guess that’s nice of the copyrighters…
Don’t recall hearing that in the Mile High. Just as well, too.
I can’t say I’ve heard that song either! (and kind of glad!)
This looks like the first real clunker of the countdown. It had to happen eventually given my taste…
