To go with the theme of today’s photo countdown entry, I encountered a couple of squirrels on my visit to the park this week who apparently thought it would be a great idea to lay out in the middle of one of the paved paths that go through the park. It’s not really a good idea for squirrels, or any living thing for that matter, to sprawl out on the pavement. There are park vehicles who travel these paths that would quickly turn this ne’er do well into a furry speed bump. It was the first time I ever went to the park on a squirrel photo mission in the month of July, and while it was warm (in the low 80’s F) even for early morning… it was hardly oppressively hot enough to warrant this kind of sluggishness. Come on, dude, getchur butt up and go look for some nuts or something!
Yes, that’s a different squirrel than the one above… I came across two of these Saturday Squirrel road hogs!
Have a great weekend everyone…. but please don’t lay out in the middle of the street!
Maybe a little cooler on the path? Although you’d think the grass would be nice and cool or up in their various TREES even. OR perhaps they have a death wish?????? I hope not – they’re too cute to be that desperate!

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t for comfort reasons… I really don’t know what they were thinking. The first one I came across was acting kind of stoned (I have a picture of him after he went up in a tree that I’m sure I’ll use in the future), so I just chalked it up to him being weird. Then when I saw a second one doing the same thing later on… I don’t recall ever seeing a squirrel laying on the path before, then two in one day! Maybe they’re trying to protest the ear notch sterilization program!
I’ve seen squirrels do this kind of thing during hot weather too. It’s like they have a sudden need to lay their tummy on a flat surface. I’ve watched them do it on my deck a lot over the years but I’ve never seen one do it on an asphalt path and I’ve never seen one look so annoyed at getting interrupted. His expression is hilarious!
It looks like it would be too hot to be laying on the concrete. Granted, it was the 8:00 hour, so it hadn’t gotten really hot yet, but laying on the cool grass would seem to be easier on the belly than a paved path!
Aw, I’ve never seen squirrels sitting motionless outside of the trees before. I guess they have the same right to sunbathe as everyone else.
Well, I’m glad he didn’t ask me to rub any lotion on his nuts then…
We had a cat who did that and unsurprisingly, the SECOND time she got run over, we put her down. She couldn’t seem to figure out that she had to get out of the way. It was sad, but some animals really love the feel of warm concrete.
Yeah, my outside cat I’m caring for is very bad at that. And walking in front of my car as I’m trying to pull in the garage. You’d think the little thing would be scared of the big car, but no…
Wow, I’ve never seen a squirrel lay in the road unless…well you know. That’s amazing!
Yeah, it would be like one of us lying in a casket!
I had to look it up. It looks so funny.
Per many articles sqirrels lay flat on their stomachs to get cooler. They stretch out to help dissipate heat. There were many pics of the little beauties in the road. Just seems weird. But if the computer says it, all true.
