#129 – Black Or White

Photo taken: August 24, 2012

This is my sister’s cat Sugar Tank, aka Panther, aka Bad Kitty.  A few years ago, he had an issue with excessive grooming, where he literally licked all of the fur off of the inside of his legs and lower belly.  The only other two cats I ever knew of who did this were Spilly and Biskit…. which is really odd since all three are black cats.  Regardless of the whos or whys of cats licking themselves bald, I thought this photo I took of my sister holding up her hairless puss…… er, balding kitty looked unique enough to throw in the countdown.  I don’t think I would want my bald spot to be prominently displayed for the world to see… but when you’re a spoiled pet, sometimes you just have to put up with stuff like this.

My elderly cat, Sully has done something similar. He has not made a patch this big though. He would sit in the middle of the living room, on a chair or at the foot of my bed so he could pull piles of hair out. He did not lick ,he would grab a clump of hair in his teefs and pull it out. He usually does it when he is feeling highly stressed. He did it for a while after we moved. Then again a few years later when we got Milly the Shed cat before she was moved to the shed for peeing in the clothes washing machine. The most recent time was while I would babysit my grandson. Sully was kept away from my grandson, but I think my grandsons joyous squeals were too much for him. I no longer babysit so Sully has stopped pulling his hair out again.

    • I’ve heard it was related to stress, though that would only explain one of the three situations I’m familiar with. That’s the first time I’ve heard of a cat intentionally pulling its fur out with its teeth, though! That’s like people literally pulling their hair out in frustration, and I don’t think anyone actually does that. Cats can be weird sometimes…

Aw, poor kitty. I wonder why he did that?

  3. I too have heard that the hair pulling is stress related…..Also can apparently mean they are in some kind of pain or discomfort. Hopefully Tank stopped the behavior and is fine and dandy now!

    • That picture’s six years old, and though I haven’t seen him in a couple years, by all accounts he’s doing fine. It was also blazing hot that particular summer and maybe he just wanted a cool belly…

  4. Definitely a double X rating.
