One of these people will die listening to this earworm…

We at The Nest hope your Monday is off to a rip roaring start.  And just in case it isn’t, or the Mr. Coffee went out again, we’ll try to get your blood pumping with another fun and frivolous entry from our Top 30 Novelty Songs of All Time countdown!  DJ Scratchy’s all geeked up to present this week’s honoree that wouldn’t have gotten in this countdown had the Sponkies’ creator Aunt Sharon (Gentlestitches) not introduced me to the song in a comment on this Saturday Squirrel post.  Stupid or not, I couldn’t stop going back to replay this song…. it’s just inanely catchy.

#19. “Star Trekkin'” – The Firm

The late 60’s sci-fi series Star Trek only lasted a handful of seasons on American television, but maybe no made-for-the-small-screen production has ever become a bigger phenomenon than the crew who boldly went where no man had gone before.  The original Trek spawned a handful of movies featuring the original cast… decades, even after the series went off the air.  It spun off a bunch of alternate TV series as well… the first one (The Next Generation) rivaling the original in popularity, cultural significance and geekery.  Trekkies can even still attend conventions dedicated to the Star Trek universe and get their fake Spock ears autographed by cast members…

You want me to sign your uncle’s death certificate with “He’s dead Jim!”?  That’ll be $50.

And in 1987, Star Trek inspired its greatest memento of life on The Enterprise… a novelty song.  Crafted by a British duo called The Firm (No, not THAT The Firm), and brought to life with a delightfully fucked up stop motion video that zapped the shitty California Raisins skits with a phaser beam set to “Melt”… here’s that tribute to our favorite Federation crew, “Star Trekkin'”

Because of the “Twelve Days of Christmas” format to this song, we get to hear….

Uhuru freak out about Klingons on the starboard bow five times…

No Klingons on me!

Mr. Spock utter a trademark line four times that he never actually said on the show…

Elementary, my dear Watson.

Dr. McCoy sealing the fate of another red shirt three times…

It’s worse than that, he’s dead, Chip.

Captain Kirk give his philosophy on dealing with aliens twice…

This lead is courtesy of Planet Earth, you green fuckers!

And Scotty, with probably the best line in the song, only gets to babble on in his stereotypical accent once…

Who says ye canna change the laws of physics?

A brilliant satire on a popular fictional series, or an annoying earworm that needs to be thrown into the middle of the sun?  You decide.  My verdict has already been rendered…

Come back next Monday as I beam up another fun song for your listening pleasure…

  1. That is so hilarious……love it. Spock is perfectly portrayed in clay…..actually they all are but Spock truly cracked me up. I miss Sharon from Gentle Stitches – I do hope she hasn’t been captured by aliens!!

    • The likenesses made out of potatoes is spot on in most cases! Another fun song that’s made even better by a great video. I miss Aunt Sharon a lot, and it’s not the same without her around… fair dinkum!

  2. Oh memories, memories! I don’t recognize the music, but of course, this nation is following everything you do, we had TV series, and I liked it, especially Mr.Spock.

I know that song so well I’m not even going to bother playing it. It pops into my head from time to time. I have it on 7″ single here somewhere…
And the first thought that popped into my head when I saw your first picture was “well, that guy in the red is screwed” before I even read your caption.

    • I was wondering if you’d respond right away since I know you wouldn’t need Alexa’s help for this one. I do enjoy wearing my red shirts…. nobody ever notices the blood stains in them.

  5. This threw me off when I read “The Firm.” LOL. This is too funny. Cute cute cute.

    • I guess since they weren’t a serious music act, nobody made them change their name to something less confusing. Not that the other The Firm was all that successful, but they at least had star power.

  6. big time star trek fan here; the original cast; I’ll admit I’m that old 🙂 !! 🙂 will have to give this a listen to when home and on the trusty Iphone !! 🙂 ♥

  7. Gotta love the cheesy paper mâché props.

  8. I’m going with an annoying earworm. Oy, I hope it doesn’t stay there too long. I might get desperate and try to remove it with a knife.

I’m a big Trek fan. All series (yes even Enterprise) and the movies, especially the new ones. I love Chris Pine.
I’ve heard a ton of trek parodies including this one, but I swear it wasn’t this version. I’ve never seen the video which is hilarious! Great choice.
