#126 – The Lonely Sunflower

Photo taken: July 17, 2010

Thanks to someone that I used to know, I have a kind of bittersweet attachment to sunflowers.  Eight years ago when the newness of having my own home was still pretty fresh, I bought a packet of sunflower seeds and planted them in the bed the tulips usually spring forth from every April.  A few of those actually became seedlings.  Two of the seedlings survived to grow into stalks.  But only one of them got to blossom into an actual sunflower… and you’re looking at the one and only fruit from my entire gardening career.  It’s a pretty sad looking specimen, but there’s a certain spunk and pluckiness to it that makes it appealing despite its obvious flaws.  Much like the person it was planted in honor of.  I tried to repeat the sunflower experiment the next Spring, and just when the seedlings came up, this happened and that was that…

  1. I got not only one… and it’s ok, I was a fan of Stephen King and I remembered how he described a house with sunflowers in “IT” … so better without ;O))))

Love sunflower – might try to grow some next year!

One bloom from a whole packet of seeds. Nature is harsh. And whatnot.

    • Yeah. Imagine if that would’ve happened when the Garden of Eden was planted. And on the sixth day, God used his black thumb to smash the earth and went back inside to watch TV….

The flower is really pretty and the stem is able to support the flower, which makes your one seedling more successful than anything I’ve ever grown from seed! I love sunflowers. I wish I could grow them but, even if the squirrels didn’t gnaw them off, there’s no way I could get something that top-heavy to reach for the sun in my yard. 🌻

    • My squirrels have left my pitiful gardening as well as the bulbs planted by the previous owner alone for some reason. Maybe they know I don’t care about the plants and figure it isn’t worth the trouble since it wouldn’t aggravate someone…

  5. The weather gods are getting VERY cranky. And who can blame them?

  6. Sunflowers are pretty cool – when you see a whole field of them it’s very impressive but I’d be happy with ONE. Whenever I’ve tried to grow them the deer have enjoyed them WELL before I could.

  7. It’s quite beautiful. Love the shadow of it against the wall. Perhaps your sciuridae neighbors just couldn’t wait until the other one bloomed. One single volunteer that came from who-knows-where has managed to naturalize quite nicely. We’ll see if they return next year. 🐿
