#117 – Flipping Out

Photo taken: July 24, 2013

What do you see in the photo above?  Does it resemble the legendary sasquatch Bigfoot?  Is this shitty photo finally proof positive that the mythical beast of the forest exists?  No… it’s actually something even more extraordinary than Bigfoot, although it’s very hard to make out given how blurry the photo wound up.  I actually managed to catch a squirrel in mid-backflip!  Can you see that now?  If you’re wondering where its tail is, that would be the very lightly colored transparent blotch of grey above his rear end.  Yes, this squirrel was quite literally going nuts in my backyard, and I happened to snap at just the right time to catch him head over heels (Shouldn’t that really be heels over head?) in midair.  Amazing timing, shitty luck with the focus.  Ain’t that how it always goes…

  1. wow not bad … I fist thought it is a bear ;O)))

  2. I love when squirrels go wild. I see this flip stuff when they are in their “frenzy” and go about two feet UP a tree trunk then backflip off. I think they’re showing off for each other during mating season……..OR…….trying out for the US Squirrel Gymnastic Team.

I did think it was a bear! Never seen a squirrel backflip, but I’m sure they’re acrobatic enough to do it!

    • When squirrels are in their nutty mode, they do all kinds of strange things! I remember this squirrel in particular was very, very odd. I think he was on a major sugar high or something….

Even though I frequently see squirrels flip out, I was unprepared for how funny your photo would be and I nearly choked on my coffee. That’s hilarious! They flip out so fast that it’s amazing you caught it that much in focus.

    • It was pure luck I even got that particular moment since the delay on that camera was so long, there was no way I could even anticipate it. It took me a while to even figure out what I had caught…

  5. I thought it was a crazed Koala. Go figure.

Yeah, we believe you. It looks just like those suspiciously blurred “UFO” photos…

  7. Clearly this character is not Nadia Comaneci on the mat but cute nonetheless.
