#17. “I Drink Alone” – George Thorogood and The Destroyers

While blues music was one of the foremost influences on American rock and roll, very few musicians with a heavy blues background have ever been commercially successful when it comes to cracking mainstream radio.  And those who have tend more towards the rock side of the spectrum.  Such an artist is George Thorogood and his band The Destroyers… an act that is best known for being “Bad To The Bone”…

Touching the sides would be b-b-b-b-b-b-b-bad!

Despite “Bad To The Bone’s” enduring popularity, it was never a Top 40 hit.  In fact, Thorogood NEVER had a song chart in the Top 40 in his career.  That’s a sobering truth that may have him reaching for the bottle…. and that’s a good thing.  Because when George drinks, he drinks alone.  And the result is this amusing little rock number…

You know when I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself.  Thank you Captain Obvious!

Go away, dammit!

And then George introduces us to the only people who are allowed to drink with him.  His good Buddy Weiser, Johnnie Walker, Jack Daniels, Jimmy Beam, and of course his dear Ol’ Grandad.  With a blood alcohol level that high, you might wake up alone in the morgue… and possibly find out that the mortician is a necropheliac who prefers to have sex alone…

Oh, the embalmer brought along his good buddy Weiser…

Come back next Monday for another Happy Hour special…

  1. the guitars at the begin scream CHEEEEEEERS! love it that is the ultimate booze song ;O)))

  2. Great way to start the week…a little George, a little blues and that jacket. Holy cow or python or whatever animal skin that was!

    • I have no idea… and I’m sure PETA wouldn’t approve. And along with all the drinking and smoking, this video has become quite politically incorrect in the past three decades! I’m sure George doesn’t give a shit, though….

How funny, I was just thinking about ol’ George and his Destroyers last night when they came up as a suggestion on YouTube. I get in the mood to listen to them every once in awhile. I never get in the mood for drinking but, if I did, alone would be the way to do it because listening to drunk people annoys the hell out of me!

    • I have to deal with too many drunk people at Mecca at night, and the booze on their breath isn’t the only thing about them that’s annoying. Most of my family are not fun to be around even when they’re just tipsy. All the more justification for me being a teetotaler..

  4. Nice. Good choice. You gotta love George Thorogood. And he sang “Take me out to the ball game” for the crowd when he took his daughter to her first professional game. How cool is that.

  5. We need a genre of music titled “Special songs for drunks.” I’m pretty sure it would be a very popular genre. But everyone would listen alone.

I don’t like this one, sorry. His other song, the John Lee Hooker original, One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer, is the only song I like by George Thorogood.

    • The classic rock station here likes to play that one along with (I think it’s called) “Rent Money Boogie,” which I find hilarious. I like pretty much every song of his I’m aware of, and I’m not really a fan of blues or blues rock…

      • crimsonowl63 says:

Hmm, Rent Money Boogie does sound good. Maybe I’ve done ole George wrong. We do have a few of his albums since my husband likes him a lot.
Thanks for the Rent Money Boogie. I think that will be good. I shall reevaluate.

  7. Drinking songs should be listened to when you’re too drunk to notice how bad the music is…..LOL I do remember this one though – for me that’s progress right?

  8. draliman says:

Yeah, I’m well down with this song, man. Great mixture of rock and blues.
Alexa played me the “2000 digitally remastered” version. Hope I didn’t lose anything! Great band name, too.
