#96 – Master Of Their Domain

Photo taken: November 30, 2013

The house next to me sat vacant for three years from 2011-2014, and during the summer of 2012, I seized the opportunity to “steal” the very unclaimed birdbath out of their front yard.  Given the drought that season, I wanted to make sure the squirrels had some access to water.  My squirrels enjoy sitting in it, and a photoshoot of a squirrel playing in its bowl became the inspiration that launched my long running Saturday Squirrel feature.  I think this is my favorite birdbath squirrel photo, though you need a little imagination to see the magic in it.  The squirrel, with arms propped up on the rim, looking out over his backyard kingdom like a sciurine emperor.  It is truly his domain, even if he doesn’t help to mow the lawn…

  1. Great shot of that guy checking out the yard action. Our bird bath is quite the mecca (yeah I said that word) for all kinds of critters – have seen raccoons, deer, birds, squirrels, the occasional skunk, and even a groundhog either IN the birdbath or up on hind legs slurping. It’s a challenge to keep it full of water unless I get help from Mom Nature in the form of LOTS OF RAIN. Glad you rescued that one – at least it has a happy home.

    • I’ve never seen any other critters in it (though other than bunnies and stray cats, I rarely see any non-squirrel wildlife around). I do have a more intended resident enjoying my birdbath that I think I have coming up later in the countdown…

I like the quotes around the word “steal”…
He looks ready to repel any non-sciurine invaders.

That is the cutest little squirrel – very perky. I love the way they are always on alert!

  4. It’s either flood or drought, isn’t it? We’ve had a LOT of rain lately. Nothing compared to other parts of the country, but bad enough.

    Awww, that is so cute!
