People may have had enough of silly love songs… but we at The Nest know you can never grow tired of just plain silly songs. That’s why we’re counting down the best of the weird and unusual in our Top 30 Novelty Songs of All Time countdown! We’ve reached lucky #13, and DJ Scratchy’s about to get a little twangy on us. While the Sponkies are about to get a humorous lesson on why hippies and rednecks don’t mix…
#13. “Uneasy Rider” – The Charlie Daniels Band
It’s quite possible you expected a different entry from country’s wildest outlaw, Mr. Chuck Daniels, to appear in this countdown. After all, his biggest hit is one of the funnest country rock songs of all time, and pretty novel in its own right. You know the one, about the fiddle player and the good ol’ boy…

Wow. Who knew Darth Maul could play the fiddle?
Yes, you can’t help but stomp your feet and clap your hands whenever CDB’s 1979 smash “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” comes on the radio. That one may be a tad TOO popular for our countdown, and besides, I slightly prefer a song Charlie did six years earlier that was also a Top 10 hit, but that seems to have largely been forgotten. This one is even quirkier and cornier than “Devil,” and features the iconic early 70’s clash between the 60’s counterculture and the more traditional Deep South set to a twangy guitar. Let’s give it up for “Uneasy Rider”…
You gotta love any song where in the very first lines, the singer admits he’s “tokin’ on a number”…
Charlie talks his way through the entire song, but that’s OK because at least he remembers to rhyme most of the time. The high point of “Uneasy Rider” comes when we meet ol’ Green Teeth and his friends, who have a bone to pick with this long haired freaky person. After a lot of hilarious, but really unnecessary theatrics, Charlie escapes the bar with his life just as his flat tire has been fixed by the guy at the “fillin’ station.” That means he won’t be forced to squeal like a piggie…
Join me next Monday as I reveal the next awesome novelty song that’s liked by long haired hippie type pinko fa…
Oops, sorry!
I LOVE IT!!!!! and I bet our Easy Rider would love this song too… it is so much him LOL
I thought of Easy when I posted this. I can imagine him toking on a number…
“Fellow with green teeth.” OMG how can anyone forget that line. I haven’t heard this song in years but I know all the words. This is great. Good choice. I’m laughing out loud. Charlie Daniels – such a great storyteller.
This song makes me laugh every time. There were some awesome story songs in the 70’s. And then there were all the corny story songs that ended in death…
“Rocky, I’ve never had to die before
Don’t know if I can do it…”
Dafuq!?!?
remember this one …great tune then, and still !!!!! 🙂 ♥♥
Yes!!!
Some nice bango and fiddle pickin’ there. Always like Charlie Daniels, especially The Devil Went Down to Georgia, my personal favorite. 🎻
Your ability to find appropriate uncommon emojis never fails to amaze me!
😇
That’s just too funny! I’d never heard it before, but love it! 🙂
It’s a deeply hidden classic that should get played more…
That is a wild and wooly one for sure……Charlie Daniels always has a story to tell and I immediately thought of EasyRider too!
Pam
Charlie Daniels would’ve been the cool grandpa who could accompany his tales of yore with singing and some fiddle music…
Cool, a whole story in a song! I’m glad he got away unscathed.
Had he not got away unscathed, I guess I’d have a different song here since this one wouldn’t exist…
And I do believe it’s your birthday, if I recall. Happy birthday!
That’s right, thanks!
