Take The Money And Run

Boy, talk about frost on the pumpkin!

In an effort to attract the squirrels to come out into the cold, fluffy snow and play so I could get some picture last week… I threw out several handfuls of peanuts as well as a fresh ear of squirrel corn.  As I’d mentioned earlier this year, the feeder I used to put the corn in was literally eaten into the trunk of the tree and finally came apart over the summer.  Since my Mecca no longer sells these feeders, I’ve taken to just placing the corn at the base of the tree for them to nibble off of.  You can see it sticking out of the snow there just above my watermark.  I assumed this would be a reasonable solution to the problem that would still allow my squirrels to get fed…

Mmmm, this is so good. I can’t take just one bite…

I was wrong.

Right before my very eyes, the squirrel quickly scooped up the entire ear of corn in his mouth, and fled up the tree with it!!!  Now, that would have been a pretty cool photo to get…. had I, you know, actually got a good picture of his thievery…

I doubt the prosecution will be able to use this photo at the trial…

And so this squirrel brought the corn up to his nest where he proceeded to hide it for himself.  The little bastard!  Not the behavior we at The Nest expect out of our Saturday Squirrel honorees.  Sharing is caring, dude…

Have a great weekend everyone!

Such a cute little thief! It’s amazing they can carry something as big as a corn cob in their mouth, and to do it so quickly too! E

Why take one little bit when you can have the entire thing?

  6. In the cold of winter? It’s every squirrel for himself!!

  7. In a former life I worked in a DA’s office. For the record, we got convictions on less convincing evidence. I’m just flabbergasted they hadn’t totally devoured your pumpkin! What kind of hoity-toity squirrels don’t nosh on pumpkins out of the front yard? 🎃

    • I started throwing the squirrel o lantern out back after Halloween just assuming the squirrels would love it and I’d get some nice pics of them devouring its carcass. But other than using it as a stepping stone or feeding perch, they never touch it! I must have a weird bunch living near me…

  8. Well I suppose that guy believes in “bulk shopping” – why have a small package when you can get the BIG ONE at the same price (free). Hopefully he’s still able to squeeze out of his nest after devouring a mega-meal like that.
