#31 – The Lovesquirrels

Photo taken: May 9, 2014

Squirrels aren’t the most social creatures in the world… generally more willing to pick fights with each other than sit around a bowl of acorns and catch up on old times.  And of course, mating season is mating season… but besides the showmanship and competition over the babes, it’s largely just wham bam thank you ma’am.  The tender side of squirrels is one that is very rarely seen… but these two seem to be taking a little time out of their busy lives for some romance.  I am reasonably sure this is the only time I have ever seen a squirrel couple actually cuddling before.  Awwwwww!  This is just one of several photos I took in this series, the full set of which can be found here.

  1. Almost looks like he’s trying to keep his pal from falling off the fence! “Watch out Ralph! You’re dangerously dangling there buddy!”………….

    • That is some connector between the telephone pole in my backyard and an electrical pipe that runs parallel to it… and I know that thing is not wide at all. I have no idea how they’re both laying so comfortably there, but they have to be subtly using every squirrel physics trick in the book to keep from falling!

  2. I don’t know, maybe it’s me… but that doesn’t look like romance. More like a wrestling match.

    • It could be if they were moving, but I have several other photos of them in relatively the same positions. They didn’t move until I got too close for their comfort with the camera…

  3. I’m surprised they managed to catch one another-they’re usually too fast. The squirrels in my tree race around like the Flash though I’m sure they’ve managed to grab some fur along the way.

Doesn’t seem the most comfortable place for a post-coital snuggle.

Aw, so cute! And totally weird the way that one squirrel is dangling there….
