#22 – Monkey See, Monkey Do

Photo taken: May 11, 2016

For the final stop on The Nest’s tour of shitty statuary in this countdown, we’re going to take a look at one of the most unfortunate statues to ever be placed in a family friendly environment.  This monument to past St. Louis Zoo president Charles Vierheller is legendary in this area… and for absolutely none of the right reasons.  While Mr. Vierheller no doubt loved animals given his many contributions to what is considered to be one of the world’ greatest free zoos, this everlasting tribute to him may take that love of animals just a bit too far.  When viewing this statue from any angle at the front, there is absolutely no way to avoid the thought that perhaps this chimpanzee is offering his master a little extra “thanks” for taking such good care of him.  Dog bless the St. Louis Zoo for continuing to keep this statue erect (pun completely intended) in spite of its giggle inducing nature…

yikes! an odd choice by the artist and zoo )

  2. that was my first thought too…. I should look for some soaps to clean my minds lOL

  3. OMG… please tell me again this is real, because it’s absolutely awful! Did no one really see that when it was being designed and installed? I love animals as well… but there’s a limit!!

    • It is absolutely real and I think everyone involved has just agreed to not recognize what it looks like. I remember the statue when I was a kid going to the zoo and obviously never noticed the perverted innuendo until I got a bit older. In the statue’s defense… from a side view, it doesn’t look as obvious…

  4. I remember the first time you had this little gem on the blog…..I’m amazed that thing is still there!

  5. I didn’t realize the St. Louis Zoo is free. Wow, no wonder the chimp is showing extra gratitude. Makes you wonder how the artist’s career went after unveiling this controversial piece.

    • I seem to recall from my youth that it was one of three free zoos in the country (along with Lincoln Park in Chicago and the Washington Zoo in DC), and it is still free today. They do find ways to bilk money out of the visitors, though, with all of the popular kids exhibits they advertise being pay per view…

      • Still, free admission to a zoo is a big deal. The Denver Zoo seems to increase it’s entrance fee often in addition to ‘offering’ all sorts of expensive toys at the gift shop along with pricey ‘stadium-like’ food for patrons. I always feel a bit fleeced whenever I go.

      • We have Charles Vierheller and his special love of chimps to thank for not getting fleeced at the St. Louis Zoo…
